Business Analysis

As a seasoned business analyst in my younger years and also having been BCS certified, I decided to purchase this book to refresh my memory and pick up on points that I may have otherwise missed. In my view, this is the de facto standard in Business Analysis. The book begins with setting out some of the challenges that modern Business Analysts face (and have previously faced), a model to determine the maturity of an organisation (and how far along they are where business analysis is concerned) before detailing tools and techniques that every business analyst ought to have in their trust toolkit. It's a great book, easy to read, and a must buy. After having read it, I decided to do a small 5 minute intro to business analysis in a youtube video. Search for "Plato Hack" in youtube if you'd like to see it.

This is an excellent reference book for new and seasoned business analysts alike. I originally bought the first edition, but have bought the second edition on my Kindle so I can refer to it. For experienced business analysts, it is a useful memory jogger. It covers some angles that are often missed in BA books -- for example, external environmental analysis. It gives a very well-rounded view, and is useful (without being too 'wordy').

Very good summary of core BA skills. As other reviewers have noted, some of the strategic stuff is chiefly relevant for understanding how a business works and passing the ISEB exams, many BAs may find the chapters on process modelling, requirements engineering and stakeholder management more useful on a day to day basis. One thing that is unfortunate - the subediting is so poor that it's quite distracting, the typos, spelling/grammar errors etc. make the book look rather unfinished. Also, for the price, some improved diagrams and illustrations (possibly even a bit of colour?) would be welcome.

This book has just arrived and from what I have saw, it has everything in the book that the subject/ module requires from information to diagrams. I am looking forward to this book to help me understand the diagrams with examples which are in the book, to help me pass this module at university level. There is so much information in the book and I would highly recommend anyone to purchase this book, looks excellent reading and just what I need to help me pass my exams.

I needed a book for the ISEB Business Analyst Diploma (BCS) course. I did some research for most relevant book and came across this one. After reading the preview section, I knew this is the one. I placed the order and was advised that the delivery would take upto 5 working days. To my pleasant supprise, it turned up within 2 days, well packaged, 5* service. The book covers all the topics the course is designed for, spot on. You could almost just read this book and turn up to take the exam, it's that good.

The book used as the syllabus for the BCS Diploma. Covers a lot of ground including strategic analysis and business case development which can be found in more depth in MBA texts. Would recommend additional reading where topics are covered briefly e.g. Agile methods, or for more in depth practical advice - try "Discovering Requirements" by Ian Alexander, plus he's a nice guy when you meet him. I'm a BA but never had any formal BA training - or so I thought. Seems my undergrad business degree covered almost everything that a BA should know (according to this book) so I see it as a condensed version of a degree that contains formal methods a BA could/should be using. I see the BCS has rebranded and trying to push diplomas and exams in this...which is fine but unnecessary if you have done a half decent business degree. I've yet to see a job advertised asking for a BA qualification from ISEB. There are a number strands to being a BA...systems analyst, process analyst...mix of both and some people fall into one camp or the other. I'm more of a systems analyst so when it comes to the process side of things, I find books like this useful.

As a project manager i wanted to dive more into the BA world and understand the process BAs follow and how they operate. Very helpful information. All processed are clearly defined, whether it is investigation tasks or solution providing. It's a very good reference book for any project. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested to expand his BA knowledge in the right direction.

I had this book for my 300 level Business Analysis college class (rented from the university), and liked it so I decided to buy it. My field of study is business analysis. Pros: *Concise-very readable! Right to the point, no fluff *Great explanation of business analysis in relation to business strategy and the IT technical side of a business *Easy-to-follow organization and layout Cons: *(for USA) Some techniques described are more common in the UK than in the USA my professor said, but most topics are universal *Lack-of-in-depth description, direction, and examples would make this text hard to use on its own. With in-class demonstrations, though, it becomes a very handy companion. Purchase this book if you want a good overview of what it means to be a business analyst. *Headers do not say what chapter number you are in- Why not?! I do not understand how textbooks are allowed to be printed without headers on each page saying what chapter it is. FYIs *The book is in all black and white. *For taking tests: the diagram on page 172 is incorrect; "business continuity" should match the text and be under the "General" heading, not the "Non-functional" heading. *Since the book is written in British English, at first I found it slowed me down and distracted me when I was reading it, because I wasn't used to English wording and spelling in the business world. "Program" becomes "programme," "organization" becomes "organisation," and "agree to/with" becomes "agree." If I hadn't taken the class I still would buy this book to have a better understanding of the field of business analysis.

Just received the book today, so I cannot comment on the content for now, but the delivery was as expected.
