Hollywood Racks Over-The-Top Trunk Mounted Bike Rack

Over the last 25 years, I have owned 2 inexpensive Rhode Gear bike racks, and been generally happy with them. I would still be using my Super Shuttle 2 rack (bought on Amazon in 2012) if it were not for the fact that my current car (a mid-sized SUV) simply does not allow for a safe attachment point for the top straps. Needing a solution, I purchased this Hollywood Rack, which has three different options for handling that problem. While the price was much more than I have spent in the past, after researching hitch and roof racks, it was the best option for me.Installing it, I was more than surprised to find the product is superior in every way in both design and quality of the manufacturing. I now feel the cost was justified, as I am confident this will be the last rack I ever buy. There is no question that it will last long enough, and it can be configured to fit any type of car. After installation, with 2 bikes properly mounted (I have done this more than a few times), there was no bounce or sway while driving, so I am comfortable that I will always arrive with the same number of bicycles I left with, and all the relevant bits will still be attached.I am writing this because I make purchase decisions based on other people's reviews all the time, even though I generally do not write them. In this case, I feel compelled to tell this story, in case someone else is undecided. In brief: if the cost is not a roadblock, you will be happy with the product.Note to Hollywood Racks: Under no circumstances should you ever consider lessening the quality of what you ship inside the box, even if it gets you to a lower price point.Update 2018Sep1: People are constantly asking this question through Amazon: "Will this rack with fit my (fill-in-the-blank) car?"Rather than ask here, go to the Hollywood Racks web site, because there is an interactive fit guide at the top of the main page that will answer the question for you. Simply enter the year, make, and model of your car, then click the Search button. The search results will show you every type of rack they make that fits your car. Look for the type of rack you are considering (in this case, it is called "F2 Over-the Top"); it the rack you are considering is listed on the page, then it ***will*** fit your car.After confirming that it will fit, the next step is to learn how the rack needs to be configured to fit. Remember that this rack is built with 3 different sets of straps (top of the trunk/tailgate, side of the trunk/tailgate, and bottom of the trunk/tailgate), ***and*** it also has 3 different methods of attaching just the top straps, so you need to know which of the 3 attachment methods to use.Keep scrolling down the results page and look for the section titled "Footnotes applied"; this section will tell you how to fit the rack to your car.For my car, the footnote reads: 31 - (F2 Only) Top attachment: roof rails- Side attachment: standard hooks- Bottom attachment: standard hooks.The Footnotes section can be different for any car, but for ***my*** car it means:1.) The top attachment straps should tie around the roof rails2.) The side straps use the standard hooks that are already attached to the straps when the rack comes out of the box3.) The bottom straps use the standard hooks that are already attached to the straps when the rack comes out of the boxNow that you know which parts you need to attach the rack, you have only to mount it.***If you are required to use the roof rail straps***, the directions are somewhat confusing, so here is my explanation. First, look inside the plastic bag of extra parts to get the roof rail straps; they are 2 short straps with rectangular metal loops at both ends, and with a fabric wrapper that goes around the strap and stays put with with Velcro. Next, pass one end of a strap around the roof rail next to where it attaches to the car, and insert the metal loop on one end though the metal loop on the other end, forming the strap into a simple slipknot around the bar. Inserting one loop through the other seems impossible at first because the loops are exactly the same size, but the way to do it is to turn one of the loops sideways, then insert it through the other other. After the loop is through, return it to its proper direction, because that allows you to then insert the hook on the top strap of the rack into the metal loop. It is the tension of the top strap that keeps the hook inside the metal loop, but the fabric then wraps around the metal hook and loop with Velcro, to keep both parts from coming apart if the strap gets loose. Repeat with the second strap, and you are ready to mount the side and bottom straps.Warning for everyone who is not experienced with racks: Tighten ***all 6*** straps snugly and evenly when you mount the rack, but repeat this step ***after*** you have loaded bicycles onto the rack. The weight of the bicycles will cause straps to loosen slightly, and also reveal straps that are not as snug as you thought they were. Repeating this step will insure your bicycles are stable and safe when traveling. With 2 adult bikes, my rack does not bobble or sway at all, and the bikes stay secure even when hitting a bump in the road.

I bought this rack because all of our newer cars have spoilers and I needed one that would "reach over" that. To quickly summarize: truly great quality (albeit a bit heavy), very adjustable, rubber straps work really well.When I researched racks, one of the comments for this particular rack was that it was really high quality. It is. The engineers designed it well and the accountants did no go back and strip out the good stuff to save on materials. It is A LOT stiffer/sturdier than our former rack. The biggest "downside" to that is that it is a bit heavy. Weight is not a problem in that you plop it on the bumper, put the top straps in place and you are done dealing with any weight.The very first time you use this rack (or any rack), you will spend a bit of time adjusting it. However, it provides options that should allow you to get it to fit on anything. It is very flexible and easy to adjust -- no tools required and nothing is difficult to adjust. I do not see this as a downside, but know that you are going to have to spend a bit of time on the adjustments the first time. Of course, once you have done all this initial setup, you never have to do it again if you use it on the same car.One of my purchase criteria was that I needed it to hold 3 bikes. This one comes in both a 2 and 3 bike version. I had no difficulty getting 3 bikes on this rack. Although having one of those bike adapter bars that runs from the handle bars to the seat would definitely help with smaller/odd-shaped women's bikes. Still, you can get by without it. The other thing I notice is that the bikes "hang nicely". In our old rack, some how the handle bars or pedals could be in the way at times, but that does not seem to be a problem here and I have some oddly shaped bikes.Lastly, I love the rubber straps. They are so easy to fasten and they do not get in the way when you put bikes on the rack. I can definitely get the bikes on and off this rack faster than my old one.

I do not usually write product reviews, but I was absolutely compelled and committed to doing so for this product! After doing deep research, reading reviews and watching user videos to find the best, safest and most practical bike rack for my vehicle (2016 RX 350 F Sport 3) I landed on this model. The challenge with my vehicle is the shape of the hood and the sport spoiler which is not for weight bearing. I needed the best available rack on the market for my very expensive bikes to fit my vehicle, for driving from Toronto, Canada to Miami, Florida. Needless to say that a 5000km round trip with my bikes on a rack made me nervous as hell. However, now having completed my trip, I am back home with my bikes safe and sound. Therefore, all I can say is that if you are looking for a secure, safe, easy to use and practical bike rack then look no further. This is it! An absolutely amazing product, with simple set up out the box, easy to manage as you go and that very securely holds either one or two bikes (although there is also a three bike model). That is all...enjoy your road tripping and cycle safe!!

This seems to be the only product on the market that will clear a roof spoiler, and even more surprisingly, it's not widely available in the UK. Strictly speaking, we only needed the 2-bike model, but we couldn't find anyone (on or off Amazon) selling that. The additional size and cost is minor though: don't be put off.And don't take the Hollywood compatibility list too seriously. This rack is explicitly declared to be incompatible with the Ford Fiesta, but it fits on our 2016 ST with no trouble at all.It's noticeably heavier and bulkier than the (also Hollywood) rack we had previously used on a different car but it's justified by being far more versatile and a more solid platform.

Very solid. Very well made.Best solution for cars with spoiler (when one doesn’t have a trailer hitch).
