MADONNA. ANDY WARHOL. KEITH HARING. FAB 5 FREDDIE. DEBBIE HARRY. JULIAN SCHNABEL. Jean-Michel Basquiat's transition from the subways to the chic gallery spaces of Manhattan brought the artist into the company of many of New York's established and aspiring stars. In 1988, unable to deal with the demands that his new fame brought, Basquiat, the most successful black visual artist in history, died from a heroin overdose at age twenty-seven. Widow Basquiat is an exploration of the artist as seen through the eyes of his muse, Suzanne. It is a love story like no other. Review: Compelling Read - I heard about this book on a Good Read on radio 4, so thought Iโd have a go. I wasnโt disappointed. I liked the way this book was written, it had a poetic feel to it. It was moving, and sad in places and gives a touching account of a beautiful life. Review: A compulsive read! - Read this compulsively after hearing it reviewed on Radio 4โs A Good Read. An excellent book which gives an insight into the club and drugs scene in NYC in the 70s and 80s. Brought back a few memories for me of that time, even though I wasnโt there, Iโm of the same generation. Highly recommended short read.

The book that inspired the resurrection of Dirty Book Club
Tragic, romantic and very rock'n'roll - this beautifully written little easy read left me sobbing my heart out and aching to share and discuss it - hence the title of the review - it's going to be our first book. For Basquiat, Warhol, Art, 80's and New York lovers this is a treat, but don't expect a reference book on the period, there's more to this than that.

Truly captivating.
This book is truly captivating. It is a beautifully painful love story and a poignant view of Basquiatโs life. My heart broke a hundred times reading it, but I would recommend it to anyone. The best little book Iโve read about someoneโs life.

An attractive and vivid reading
A good novel. Most about the woman of the title, of course. She has an indulgent character, very moved by her deep love. If we are looking for Basquiat's work insights, there are a few, but precise and of first hand. Basquiat appears like a romantic hero, living in poverty till his celebration by the critics. He looks like another Modigliani by many sides of his unquiet and suspicious personality. There is another end for artists than drug addiction. Basquiat did not find it, alas. The title character is strong, well depicted, often moving. We are surprised that she went through such a terrific love affair.

Interesting story
This is a very interesting story, well written and heart-felt, but gives you only a very limited perspective on the man and artist. If you're not looking to find an abundance of info on Basquiat, and you enjoy great life and love stories, this will more than do.

Interesting
This takes you into the world of the artist as viewed from his long time 'wife' ' lover.' This book is deeply subjective and written in a manner that gives insight in a way that can never truly be captured by a more scholarly approach to his life. Well worth a read if you want to get a more nuanced understanding of Basquiat.

Get The Down Low From People Who Knew Him
I have read this book at least five times. It's my go - to when I need a Basquait fix. The compelling thing about this artist is that his narrative is being constructed by the people who knew him - a clique of New York artists - many of whom are still alive. Now that Basquiat is taking his proper place in American Art History, a lot of people are coming out of the woodwork, ready to glom on, and this can be gross. Suzanne Mallouk however, is someone who intimately knew Jean-Michel, and hearing the story of Basquiat from her perspective is heart wrenching and fascinating. Jennifer Clement writes in a style that fits the subject matter, and this book adds to the historical narrative that has been spun around Jean-Michel and the New York art scene of the 1980's.
