17th Century Women's Dress Patterns: Book One

Beautiful & Practical
Bought to help with making a costume - was very useful for self drafting a pattern as well as for stitching it all together. The book pulls together several different patterns which are illustrated through portraits - they use x-rays, detailed pictures and drawings to explain how the patters are drawn and put together, offering insight into the history of some of the pieces they re-create.A beautiful and practical book.

Much like Patterns of Fashion by Janet Arnold
A must for any historical costumer! Both this and volume 2 were arriving on the market just as I was finishing my degree, and I really do wish they had been available when I was studying!Much like Patterns of Fashion by Janet Arnold, both of these books contain patterns on grids to be scaled up by the user; however, what makes these books so fantastic is that they go into great detail in how each item can be replicated with step-by-step instructions which are as close to historically accurate as the writers could make them.I was actually made aware of these books when I worked very briefly on a project at the Bowes Museum alongside costumier and contributor Luca Costigliolo. Having first hand experience of Luca's work and knowledge, I cannot recommend these books enough for anyone who wants to develop their knowledge of historical clothing and techniques.

No patterns for second half of 17th century
The detail level for the patterns and photos of the extant garments are outstanding. Unfortunately the title of the book is missing “first half of..” in it. If you are looking for pre 1630 patterns this book is a must-have. If you are looking for 1630-1640 it is a good resource just for the detailed bodice, band and cuff pattern. If you are looking into the second half of the 17th century this book not for you. Since my personal interests lies with the 1630s and onwards the book was a bit disappointing for me personally, hence only 3 stars.

Brilliant!
Well this is one to rival the great Janet Arnold. I loved this book and spent hours pouring over the excellent and detailed information and images.A must for costume historians, designers, theatre/film and nerds like myself!I teach textiles with fashion and have wondered at the technical ability of the costumes. I am in awe!
