The Winter of Polish Steam DvdThis dvd has been produced without narration in order that you can enjoy, uninterrupted, the sound of steam at work. Details are contained in sleeve notes within the dvd case. 1991 is anticipated to be the last year of steam operation on the Polskie Koleje Panstwowe, or P.K.P – the Polish State Railways. This will bring to a close the last revenue earning steam hauled freight and passenger services in Europe, East and West. This film shows these operations from a variety of ‘view-points’. The Torun-Nasielsk lines OL49 2-6-2s with scenes from Sierpc Depot. Moving on to the Miedzyrzecz and Szamotuly area, we see branch line operation with Tkt 48s. Wolsztyn depot is visited with location shots on many of the lines radiating from there showing the following classes at work: Ty 42, OL49 (including roadside running between Grodzisk and Opalenica), Ty 45 and Ty 2. Join the crew of Ty 42 148 for a footplate ride on the 12.00 Wolsztyn to Nowa Sol. Ty 3 2 is next seen working the 17.24 mixed service to Niegoslawicie. This type of train, with its time consuming shunting operations will soon be a thing of the past as Polish Railways move towards ‘Market Forces’ to take it through the 1990s. The Kopalnia Piasku Kotlarnia is a company producing sand from its vast open cast works. 1,000 ton trains are filmed worked by the massive stoker-fired Ty 51 2-10-0s equipped with American style chime whistles. As with Poland, the unexpected comes to light – the Tkh shunting a factory at Wronki, industrial locomotives near Bytom and a TY 51 taking over a heavy freight somewhere in Silesia. (1991).
