I'm also a 36 waist. Large is what you want.

How well does the waistband hold up? Getting tired of boxer briefs that stretch out and won't stay up.

They seem fine to me. I use them for pajama bottoms but I’m haven’t had a problem. But they are boxers not boxer briefs.
