very accurate
Accurate detailed description of Kaufmann’s department store. I loved reading this book and learned a lot about Pittsburgh history I did not know.

Everything every Pittsburgher needs to learn
Kaufmann’s Dept Store was an institution for most Pittsburghers. While we know that the family built Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater” we knew so little about this incredibly philanthropic family: Well written, informative & educational.

A fascinating read
This is a well written, meticulously researched book about a Pittsburgh institution. My family has deep roots around Kaufmann's and this account was a pleasure to read. I learned so much about the family, the store and the religious and cultural community in and around Pittsburgh.

Worth the wait
I've been waiting quite awhile for this book about the Kaufmann department store family to be released. It's been meticulously researched and is a wonder. Wish the photos were more 'crisp', but plenty of them. Can't wait to dive it ... I've already read several parts, via index look-up. What a great addition to the books about Pittsburgh.

Retail Nostalgia
A fascinating story about the family, but also about the world of American department stores. Most of them are gone and shopping isn't nearly as fun anymore, read this book to find out why

Informative
I bought this book after visiting Falling Water when I suspected there was a lot more to the Kaufmann family than just what the tour guides told the group. This book gave a detailed and informative perspective of the entire Kaufmann family starting with Edgar's uncles moving here from Germany. Great research throughout the entire book. Interesting stories of how the Kaufmann's started working in Pittsburgh and how history shaped the store and how the store shaped Pittsburgh. Presented subjects included historical events such as war and strikes and details about how electricity and phone lines were integrated into the stores. The Kaufmann brothers and their families were as interesting as the store's history! Edgar Kaufmann was indeed an innovative man with an eye for business and giving back to the people of Pittsburgh.

Great Read!
A wonderful story that goes beyond one fascinating family to capture the history of retail, and more broadly our culture, in Pittsburgh and beyond. I highly recommend this well-researched, engaging book.
