What I Wish People Knew About Dementia: From Someone Who Knows

Uplifting view of living with dementia
I really enjoyed this book and the insight of how it is living with dementia and the impact of other people's perception on people who have been diagnosed. I now know that how you behave with someone who has dementia can make it a hard disease to live with or a positive experience. It was also interesting how Wendy described how environments can make a difference especially using black on floors can make it look like a huge frightening hole in the floor. Well done Wendy for so eloquently explaining what it's like to live with dementia. Anyone newly diagnosed or caring for someone living with dementia should read this book. I'd highly recommend this as a good read for anyone.

Dementia in perspective
Thank you for writing this book - so enlightening as a daughter/carer. I thought I was doing well but I understand so much more now and hopefully I’ll be a much better daughter/carer, certainly try not to take over/disable my lovely mum.

Bright spots in a dim world
Many think of dementia as almost a good a death sentence because we lose our memory and sense of identity. On the darker note, Mitchell tells us that it can be worse. We also lose our sense of smell and taste. The things we love taste differently, and even offensively. Even our hearing can be impaired and loud noises sound ‘like a raging bull’ crashing through our head. We may not hear the ‘S’ and ‘T’ sounds and the result is that we may not be able to follow conversations. But Mitchell tells us that there is a bright side, and she teaches us how to get to that side. She explains the problems caused by the inability of a dementia patient to find her co-ordinates or recognise landmarks when out walking; but that does not stop her from her long walks in the countryside. She also writes about the role that family members play in a dementia patient’s life. It is important for both patient and his/her carer to know what dementia is, and the toll it inflicts on the patient and those who care for them. Mitchell also gives hope that dementia patients are still capable of living alone. But one needs to take precautions; and also maintain connections to the world. There is life in dementia, and Mitchell has first hand experience and advice that benefits dementia patients, their friends, and families.

Thought provoking
If you are interested in dementia information, you need to know the book is about Wendy Mitchell's experience of young-onset dementia, aged 58. The book is NOT about mainstream old-age dementia, where sufferers (yes, Wendy, I still say sufferers) have many age related ailments in addition to dementia. Old-age dementia has little meaningful comparison to Wendy's articulate, fit and mobile, young-onset scenario. However, the book is thought-provoking and well written and for some people well worth a read. There are omissions - for example, nothing about sexual emotions, domestic animals, and finance.

Important book
This book is written by someone diagnosed with dementia. She brings up a lot a great points on how she is treated by other people as well as the doctors. The author is giving first hand information on what she is going through what she hopes for. I have dealt with people with dementia, even within my own family. The book opened my eyes on what they go through and what is slowly happening with them. It helped me to understand how they would like to be treated and respected, this is something we all need when we deal with other people. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Condition of the book
I have nothing negative on the content of the book. It was brilliant, but its the condition of the book where I saw yellow specs on some pages. Hence I was wondering if the book has been in storage for a while & not well maintained. Thanks!
