Soundtrack to the best film of the 90s
I must have watched L.A. Confidential at least 20 or more times since it came out in 1997 - it's one of my all-time favourite films. But only recently have I bought the brilliant CD soundtrack to the movie. And what a superb listen it is.My own favourite is "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive" by Johnny Mercer, a song I knew of before it was in the film but I never knew who sung it until this soundtrack. It is a fabulous uplifting nostalgic track and you find yourself going through it in your head long after hearing the song.Dean Martin has a couple of excellent tracks included, "The Christmas Blues" and "Powder Your Face With Sunshine." Well, you couldn't have this type of film without the Rat Pack represented could you?One of the most memorable songs from the film is Kay Starrs' "Wheel Of Fortune", who has an amazingly powerful and distinctive voice.Of the rest there are some lovely jazz period pieces by the legendary Chet Baker and the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. Jackie Gleason, Betty Hutton, Lee Wiley and Joni Jones also add to the mood of this unique soundtrack. The opening and closing tracks are provided by Jerry Goldsmith, the blink-and-you-miss hearing it "Badge Of Honor" and "L.A. Confidential."This soundtrack is not just for those who like me love the film, but for anyone who loves quality music.

LA Confidential soundtrack
If you've seen the film then the soundtrack is a must have, Johnny Mercer's 'Acentuate the positive' is a great track on this CD for starters.Other than that you get artists like Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. The tracks on the CD are used within the film and you get the full versions here.Almost takes you back to the film when you hear these great tracks.

Also Vorsicht: Wer die Filmmusik will, ist hier falsch!

Grandiose Zeitreise

Great neo-noir album from a great film
Goldsmith’s famed score for Badge of Honour, a snappy, pseudo-noir jazz tune, lasts all of 21 seconds before the album propels into a series of great, classic songs straight out of the 50s detective era. Dean Martin’s The Christmas Blues is a staple song for the holiday season, while Chet Baker’s Look for the Silver Lining and Baker’s and Mulligan’s Makin’ Whoopee encompass old world jazz and charm. Mulligan’s The Lady is a Tramp is a golden work, followed by Kay Starr’s passionate number one hit Wheel of Fortune.Goldsmith’s main theme for the movie, L.A. Confidential, opens with a sentimental, orchestral/jazzy sound, with a soaring atmosphere that eventually turns into the famous gritty tune complete with ominous drums. The jazz score in the background adds depth to what could have become a typical Hollywood score. The upbeat, spicy tunes are characteristic of the time in which they were recorded: the post-war era eager to add optimism and flair to an otherwise pessimistic situation. Despite the lightness with which Mulligan and Baker tear it up (as they often did at the legendary joint ‘The Haig’), this soundtrack is a darker ode to jazz.

Captures the essence
I enjoy compilation soundtracks, because if you don't like the song you're listening to, you may like the next. But that's not a problem with this collection anyway, as each vintage recording from the 50s perfectly underscores every scene in the film and the 50s period itself. I can easily recapture each scene in my mind as I'm listening to Gerry Mulligan, Kay Starr, Johnny Mercer, Chet Baker, Lee Willey, Joni James, Jackie Gleason, and Betty Hutton - all household names at the time and musical kingpins in this award-winning, romantic crime thriller. It was Jackie Gleason who was perhaps the first to introduce "mood" music - music for lovers - and it caught on big-time during most of the 50s. Picture long flowing hair on the women, cool martinis, a black and white legal system, racial tension between the haves and have-nots - and this soundtrack captures it almost perfectly. As a bonus, there are two tracks of the original motion picture score by Jerry Goldsmith, including the emotionally evocative closing credits with the understated trumpet lead. I've listened to this CD repeatedly over the years and it's a keeper in my permanent library.

Non Confidential
This music is very different to the kind of music I usually listen to. I don't have many songs from this period so it was good for a change. I noticed some of the music from the film but can't remember all of them, but I guess they were all in it. Some upbeat, some somber and some nostalgic of the nineteen fifties. Even though I wasn't around at that time I can appreciate the, I think popular songs of the time.

It will take you back in time
Just like the movie, this music takes you back in time to the fifties! All of the songs are good on it. I love a CD that you can just pop in your car and listen to because you know you love every song. When I listen to this I imagine Kevin Spacey dancing with the starlet in the movie. And I love 50's music!

Beautiful
I am biased because this is my favorite movie, however, that being said, this is a wonderful CD. It does not have all of the songs from the film, though, and only two from the score. I believe there is a more comprehensive CD with all songs and there is a completely separate CD for the score. Overall, I still loved it!

terrific soundtrack from a great movie
Really captures the pre-rock pop music vibe of the late 40s early 50s. Great cocktail party music; d*mn swanky and cool!Good sound quality too. Whoever remastered these old recordings really did a great job; sound quality is clear and solid.

I liked this collection better
With all due respect to Jerry Goldsmith's score, I liked this collection better. This is the period music that helped give L.A. Confidential it's authentic film noire feel.

Great Period Music
One of the best movie soundtracks. The music fits the movie perfectly; especially Jackie Gleason's version of Gershwin's "But Not For Me."
