Excellent literate cosy mystery
I was surprised and delighted by this book. I bought it, frankly, because it was 99p and I was collecting bargain books. There are plenty of clumsily written, amateurish books out there at that sort of price, so I approached it with caution. Within a page, I was hooked. 'Wow! This writer can write,' I realised. Elegantly, economically and beautifully written, I loved everything about it. The setting is the unique, eccentric , not-very-spiritual world of an Anglican cathedral. I have taught in an Anglican school and had quite a lot to do with the Cathedral and clergy, its religious politics and manoeuvring and I can vouch for the author's accuracy. The characters are beautifully drawn. The plot moves forward at just the right pace. Every page was a pleasure to read. I bought the series and it gives me pleasure to think that there are eight more books in the series. Just the book to settle down with by the fire.

A bit difficult to follow
I have never used the dictionary function on my Kindle so often when reading a book! I'm not a complete idiot but there were SO many words that I'd never seen before, and references to ecclesiastical hierarchy that I regrettably, found the book very hard going. I am ploughing through a similar experience with the second book and, regrettably, I doubt I will buy the third or any further books in the series. They may be very well written, but not for me...

Clerical Errors
A severed head in the font and a missing clergyman not to speak of excessive use of altar candles are the main ingredients for this intriguing ecclesiastical mystery novel. Deaconess Theodora Braithwaite and new employee Julia Smith team up in an unofficial way to try and uncover what on earth is going on in the diocese. A Bishop who seems to be absent in spirit if not in body and a Canon who deletes in keeping everyone in their place by bullying them as well as the severed head provide them with plenty of material to work on.I enjoyed reading this novel again having first read it about twenty years ago. I like Theodora as a character and I find the Church of England background interesting. The plot is well constructed and the suspense builds up nicely towards the end. If you enjoy mystery novels with no graphic violence and no bad language then these may be one for you. This is the first book in a nine book series.

Interesting insight into cathedral living
A quite well written tale of murder, witchcraft and deceptionIn the cathedral and its environs. Plot a little far fetched at times but a pleasant, escapist read.
