Kentucky's Black Stone Cherry, comprised of vocalist Chris Robertson, guitarist Ben Wells, bassist Jon Lawhon and Drummer John Fred Young, is a band adept at creating both timeless rock `n roll and new, innovative sounds. While the band's last record, Folklore and Superstition (UK debut #23,45,000+ sales to date), was a compelling tribute to brotherhood and history, the new album is the summation of a year in the life of the band--every emotion, triumph, loss, romance and everything in between--it's all here on Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. This is the first time Black Stone Cherry has recorded outside of their home state, this time taking up residence in Los Angeles and writing with the famed Howard Benson (Theory of a Deadman, My Chemical Romance, Three Days Grace). The new surroundings allowed them to strengthen their relationships as both band members and friends, ultimately a detail that sets Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea above previous recordings. The raw intensity that pervades the music on this album harkens back to the early days of Black Stone Cherry, when they were a bunch of blue-collar guys just making music together for the hell of it. The band admits "When we first began writing music, we hadn't travelled very far out of our home state of Kentucky. Now, ten years later, we've travelled the world and experienced things we never imagined we would." First single "White Trash Millionaire," pairs Robertson's soulful delivery with the urgent and infectious rhythms of his fellow players. Sure, this is Southern rock at heart; but the concept is universal: just take what the world gives you and make that work. "This album is the culmination of all of the everyday ups and downs life throws at you," says the band. "Sonically, you'll hear some of the meanest sounding guitar riffs we've ever laid down, and at the same time, you'll find ballads that will tug on your heartstrings. We wanted the album's intensity to match that of our live show. We're very proud of this album and excited for our fans to hear it!"

Great album!
This is a very good album that mixes strengths from the first two albums. It starts with two amazing & heavy songs, much akin to the first album, then goes into the more mellow and melodic style of the second album. You'll find yourself humming some of the melodies after listening to it for sure.It is always a bit of a danger for Black Stone Cherry to sound too much like the ultra-polished and super-commercial Nickleback. I find this album avoids that - but only by a small margin. It's mostly the distinct southern rock feel that helps this album to become really good and not just good.

A refreshing change to hear some "proper" rock music
Simply - a fantastic album! I have had it now for the last couple of weeks and can't stop playing it! I am a newcomer to BSC and I feel slightly aggrieved I have only just found them! The style is classic rock - Lynyrd Skynyrd of their time and that is no mean feat! I know some people will say they have "sold out" with this album as there are quite a few radio friendly songs on here. However, I disagree, I have downloaded all the albums and it just seems a natural progression for a group of very accomplished musicians. This album is a more polished affair, but the great riffs and licks are still there and the vocals are fantastic. If rock is your genre listen and enjoy!

Good Musically with strong vocals
I find this band enjoyable and a little more of the heavier rock than I imagine. I love a lot of Southern Rock but didn't find this band until late.

my favourite
I have all 3 BSC albums and this new one is my favourite, or at least a close contender with the second album. Obviously some other reviewers have other opinions, but this album rocks all over the place, and the songs are really good, in my view much better than on previous albums. Anyway, this is not a bad album as the bad reviews will pretend. Give it a shot. Must have three CD's in any case.

Excellent
My first taste of Black Stone Cherry and I wasn't disappointed. Excellent album with many stand out tracks - haven't stopped playing it yet. Only criticism is that the CD came in a cardboard case (hence only 4 stars) as opposed to a plastic one. Not a major concern - just a personal gripe that shouldn't stop anyone buying the album.

Excellent
This is a brilliant album, probably my favourite of all their albums so far. I love to play this very loud in the car, where no one can hear my singing. In parts it reminds me a little of Lynard Skynard, which is understandable as I think they're from a similar neck of the woods. Great, can't wait for the next one now:)
