Tom House: Tom of Finland in Los Angeles

It was discovering the drawings of Tom of Finland in my 20s that made me admit to myself that I was gay, so erotically exciting were they. For gay men at the time, they opened up a whole world of self-assertion and self esteem. Tom is now an icon and this book is one of the best about him because it depicts his life, his milieu and his art in progress. The book is about the house where Tom lived in Los Angeles and it brings to life the way he lived, the art that turned him on and his personality. Some people are diminished with the passage of time. This book enhances Tom's reputation in both his life as a gay man and as the artist who proclaimed, not just that it was OK to be gay, but that it was to be different and excitingly so. The book is beautifully produced and written and the photographs are stunning.
