Hanging out with LI'L SIDD, the Baby Buddha
Meet Li'l Sidd, the meditating baby Buddha. (Buddha's name is Siddhartha Gautama, so that's where I got Li'l Sidd from.) This TOSCANO garden sculpture is intended for my Japanese garden. I have bamboo planted, some meditation stones (Karesansui), lots of bonsai trees, and a Japanese garden lantern. I've wanted to get a Buddha statue for my meditation garden for years, but most the Buddha lawn statues look cheap, or trite. They either don't look legitimate enough to follow the canon of proportions you find in real Buddhist liturgical art, or they are so stylized, that they look like some interior decorator's idea of "oriental art". This Meditating Baby Buddha is a nice compromise. It's not remotely liturgical art. The statue, which is almost life size, is a depiction of a young monk, head shaved, wearing a mala (prayer beads), in the act of meditation. The hands are not held in any traditional mudra or posture identifiable to Buddhism, but rather looks like a catholic boy ready to take first holy communion. The style of the rendering is also western, not Indian or Japanese. Of course, my Japanese garden is also filtered through western sensibilities as well, so I'm not going to fault the statue for that. Actually, the fact that it isn't trying to make some half sincere attempt to copy Indian or Japanese style, or Buddhist liturgical art, is probably why I like it. Right now, Li'l Sidd sits in the living room, so he can meditate on the chair. (Plus I let him wear my hat, because the poor little guy looks like someone on Chemo.)The statue doesn't weigh very much, maybe 15 pounds. Although cast out of resins, it does look like ceramic. TOSCANO recommends you do NOT let this sit outside once the weather begins to drop below freezing. So either cover him up with plastic, or take him inside for the cold months, so the frozen water won't crack the resin. It arrives encased in a huge block of Styrofoam, that sits inside a box. On the box it says contents very fragile, but it doesn't at all seem fragile like glass to me, or even the way a cast concrete lawn ornament might be. TOSCAN has statues on their web sites of all sorts. I used to think of them as selling gargoyles or Dragons at Spencer Gifts, but that's not the case. You can find anything from a life size elephant, to a bigfoot, life size dinosaurs, giant chickens, bigfoot, aliens, you name it. They are a leading name for lawn sculptures, with an excellent reputation.

Really sweet statue while it lasted
OK -- I had it out in our northern california garden for a few months now -- it did collect some rain inside it after a few showers, but its nice and light and could pass for marble. However it is very fragile -- my kids were hitting soft lite flite jugs balls in the backyard and one landing on it pretty much smashed it up. I plan to replace it with one of their adult Buddha statues -- love the tranquil feel it lends to a space. Reading other reviews for those darker toned statues -- there is warning that frosts and low temperatures may lead to cracks and flaking, this seemed like plastic, so not sure if this would do the same.
