Great edition
The first 100 pages are just forewords by various people involved in the research. Go ahead and skip them for your first read-through. Some of them do add some information or perspective, but for the most part they are little more than sales pitches (except you already got the book, so really just preaching to the choir). I have not seen the previous editions of this, so I do not know how much material (aside from the forewords) is new compared to previous ones. If you have the previous edition, probably you don't need this one.The actual book part starts with a good introduction setting the history and context. I have not finished my read-through yet, but for the most part it is all very interesting stuff, if you like knowing where many of the Karate teachings came from and what Karate was like before getting popularised, globalised, commercialised, and politicised.

Absolutely essential
This is the fourth incarnation of this book that I have had the pleasure of reading. I will admit to being a fan of Patrick McCarthy and very much enjoy his teaching in person, on video, and in text. So my review is biased. But then, aren't all reviews based on the likes, dislikes, and predilections of the individual? This edition features wonderful new, additional information from the likes of Andreas Quast, a notable author and researcher in his own right. Of course, the meat of the book is the translation of the ancient text. This itself is absolutely essential reading for all martial artists. The information can be cryptic and inspiring, insightful and occluded all at the same time. As far as historic documents from Karate are concerned, this is basically the oldest there is (barring the briefest mentions in historic records ). That makes it important all on it's own.So, educational, inspiring, historic - is that enough of a recommendation? In my club, the Bubishi is a required text for study amongst the black belts. This edition is the new "must have ".
