The board itself is well made and unlike other reviews, the one I received does indeed open flat. Very happy with the board.The pieces of the board are okay. They are reasonably identifiable and magnetise lightly to the board enough to deal with the judders you might face if using on a car or train but may fall if turned upside down. On my set, the white and black kings are slightly different looking in terms of the cross at the top.In summary, I feel that it is a good product for the price. The board exceeded expectations (5 out of 5 stars) and the pieces I would say were just okay (3 out of 5 stars).

I'm very pleased with this chess set. It's nicely crafted, and very playable. I bought the 10x10 set, which is big enough to enjoy playing or studying on but doesn't take up too much space. It should also be a practical size for taking to chess club at the pub. Very happy with the choice of set.

Excellent value for money and great quality. Unfortunately the spare queens were missing; I contacted company and they sent no quibbles. Son loves his chess set!

I bought this set and thought it was sad to see that lovely wood and (mostly) good work was ruined by non-existent quality checks.The 14 inch board has a good size and it is still portable.The wood good, nice to the touch and has also pleasant colours.Pieces are proportionate and, although very simple (you can’t expect more for the price), they are absolutely fine.The magnets are strong enough to put the board upside down.So, what is the problem?The first one I ordered would not lay flat on a table by a huge margin. One of the pieces had a crack.I contacted the seller (good and swift customer service).I am returning the first set and ordered a second one. Arrived today and would also not lay completely flat (although this one is “usable”). Some pieces were not properly finished (rough areas and lack of varnish).I will swap them from the faulty set, but I will still have a set that does not lay flat and a board with squares that are not aligned (by 1 or 2 mm).A real pity as the wood and most of the work is good. I would not mind to pay 15% - 20% more for a faultless product.Obviously quality assurance is not a priority for the manufacturer.So close to be a 5 star product and it is a 3 star one (and it would be less if it wasn’t because I combined both sets to get an acceptable one).The manufacturer should increase the price and the quality. They are close to get it right.

I purchased this so my grandson can play while in hospital. Very pleased with the quality and general finish. This version has magnetic fasteners which work well. My grandson loves it.

Well made, crafted chess pieces, excellent for introducing young people to the game, and playing at an experienced level. Magnetic grip for the pieces ensures game is not disrupted if board is knocked. For travelling the pieces fit neatly into the base. Very pleased with the purchase. Makes an excellent gift for young parents
