Kids Pick The Funniest Poems

Poems are somewhat mean-spirited
I was hoping for a book of silly poems that would be fun to read to preschoolers, but the poems in this book are not appropriate for my purpose. I'm having trouble coming up with the words to describe my problem with this book. The poems are too mature for preschoolers and, in addition, have a bit of a mean spirit to them. They deal with problems with siblings, make fun of other people, talk about ways to get out of going to school, dreading math tests, etc. One poem begins "I don't like doing homework, I know that it will bore me." In another, "My little brother Keith tiptoed into my bedroom and pulled out all my teeth." And a third - and these three are all within four pages - "My brother's worth about two cents, as far as I can see." This book was not the right one for me or my preschool grandchildren. I should have shopped more carefully, and I will return it.

Not for my classroom
Many of the poems are crude with stereotypical images of school as a horrible place to go and siblings as people to insult and mistreat. There's plenty of potty humor, but it's not that humorous, and there is no Shel Silverstein as one reviewer said.

Great for reluctant readers
Great book for reluctant readers. My 9 year old loves to read poems because they are fun and short. Not such overwhelming text

I still enjoy them. I read them with the girl I ...
I've had a copy of this book since I was a child. The poems are hilarious. I still enjoy them. I read them with the girl I babysat this summer and she loved it too, so I wanted to buy her a copy of her own. The condition was amazing! The jacket was even still with the book. Honestly, I was tempted to keep it for myself and give her my old copy haha.

Kids Poems
My 8 year old daughter enjoys reading this book. I read a few of the poems to her class on mystery reader day. They found some of the poems very humorous. Good read for 5-9 yr age rat

My students loved it!
This is a terrific book to get kids hooked on poetry. It includes poems by popular authors such as Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, Joyce Armor, and of course, the editor, Bruce Lansky. I bought it used for about $4, and consider it a great buy. I'm glad I have a hardback edition, as I'm sure this book will get lots of use.
