Hard Bop Academy: The Sidemen of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers

I really enjoyed this book. As a hard bop fan, it was just up my street. Although it simply comprises brief overviews of many of Art Blakey's sidemen (and one woman!), read as a whole the book gives a useful history, and appreciation, of the Messengers. Many albums are recommended which I am now following-up.An interesting and entertaining look at (in my opinion) the epitome of the jazz scene.

Absolutely stellar read, full of great interviews and statements from Ex-messengers old and new. I wold recommend this book to anyone with even a vague interest in Bop history and Blakey's groups.

Exactly what I wanted and shipped and delivered quickly. Wonderful seller.

Excellent book.

Les Jazz Messengers d'Art Blakey étaient une institution dans le monde du jazz. Une discographie extrêmement riche, une pléiade de musiciens légendaires et surtout une longévité sans précédent. Malheureusement ce livre ne fait qu'effleurer le sujet et perd rapidement son lecteur. Le livre semble refuser de s'affirmer stylistiquement. On a donc pas d'analyse musicale minutieuse mais pas non plus d'anecdotes amusantes qui auraient au moins pu rendre le tout divertissant. Pas de narration non plus qui nous ferait entrer dans le monde de ces musiciens constamment en tournée. Mais le vrai problème est probablement le format adopté dans ce Hard Bop Academy, une suite d'articles, un par musicien, qui donne un peu l'impression de lire un dictionnaire. Il aurait été préférable d'aborder l'évolution du groupe chronologiquement ou alors par lineup ou lieu de cette classification par instrument. Une opportunité manquée malheureusement, il y a sûrement matière à écrire un très bon livre sur ce sujet.

A concise, informal survey of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, told largely by a group of "talking heads" who played in the band, such as Branford Marsalis, James Williams, Bobby Watson, Benny Green, etc. There's a useful section in the back listing just about anyone who ever played in the band even for one night, plus a generous photo insert. Well-organized by the author, whose knowledge and enthusiasm on the subject helps to make the book a success.
