You need the proper tool to install these rings - I didn't but was able to get them in place after a fair amount of struggling.

Skip the expensive installation tool and use a socket
I've purchased 4 of these. 3 of them flew off into the universe someplace while trying to put it on the starter shaft. After attempting a 6 point socket (launches 2 and 3) I looked into an installation tool. The installation tool is over $80. No way I was paying that when a replacement starter including the bendix is less than 50.Digging around I located an 18 point socket that fit perfectly. The ring snapped right into place.
