This Briggs True chili spice blend is not only perfect for those who don't want to purchase all the individual spices and figure out proportions, but also great as a starting point to tweak a recipe. Mostly, you'll add more or less of this blend to give your chili the intensity of flavor you want since it contains the usual chili suspects: ground chili peppers, salt, cumin, black pepper, and onion. Next time, I plan to tweak the blend by adding chipotle powder, just because I use it for my regular recipe. I was prepared to add cumin, but I like the amount Briggs adds to this mix.The spice/heat level depends in part on how much you use. The heat level, within the proportions, is neither wimpy nor fiery. If you like the flavor that this blend adds but want more heat, you can always add hot sauce or your own ground hot peppers. Briggs True Texas Chili Mix smells amazing. It has a rich, dark reddish color. I tried a little over some eggs and was blown away by how good it tastes. It is fresh and flavorful. It's not too spicy for me, but I normally add a little cayenne to my chili. If you are used to a mild chili, it might be too hot. I think medium to medium hot is a good description.I appreciate its all natural ingredients. I am not so sure about the low sodium claim though. It is 135mg per 1/4 teaspoon serving, but that seems like a small amount compared to what would normally be used when making chili.Normally I use the mix in the brown box and that has instructions. This doesn't come with any suggestions for use, so I tried to find some recipes for how to use this online.
