Attractive, functional watch – with needed improvements. Please rate, if helpful.
The 3/4-star reviews shouldn't dissuade you from purchasing this watch. Overall, it's a fantastic ABC watch: for backpackers, photographers, and international-traveler types. Many reviewer's expectations are misplaced for a watch – the ABC tools are for reference and intended to aid you in making good decisions. A digital watch will never be as robust or reliable as analog/mechanical devices. Having said that, there are some deal-breakers that are worth consideration. Here are the outstanding pros and cons from my point of view:Pros:• Super easy basic setup (Alti/baro setup will likely require some additional research)• Minimalist design. Given the slew of features provided, this watch is sleek• Solid construction. Although I haven't yet put this watch through hell (reference armed service members for that)• Compass works well enough to navigate; when properly calibrated and declination is accounted for. Although serious navigators shouldn't rely solely on a digital compass. There is a directional-lock feature (in compass view) that is particularly helpful for quick and easy navigation.• Menu navigation is really easy once you get familiarized. Took me about 2 hours. Here is the best online video manual: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5rb9NKBPD4• Number-display scale, and layout is appropriate• Battery is easy to replace with the assistance of a coin.• Alti/Baro is surprisingly accurate when referenced to reliable sources. I live at Los Angeles sea level and often travel into the Eastern Sierras.Cons:• The negative-faced version is poorly backlight (even with proper contrast adjustments). This might be a benefit for those in the military looking to reduce their visual footprint. However, it is a huge oversight for most users, and really needs to be addressed• Body heat inflates the thermometer read out. The watch needs to be removed for an accurate reading.• A tad bulky on thin wrists (not really a con, just worthy of noting for those who have smaller wrists)• Alti/Baro log review is limited by style of display. If this is a critical feature to you, I'd consider GPS watches• You can only set a single alarm. This is also such a huge oversight. Certainly this feature is more critical to everyday usage than many other emphasized features.• The watch flickers when backllit (in compass mode). This will surely drive you crazy.• One last item to note – the numerical display is mono chromatic. The Amazon.com main image might have you think the display is a purple hue, but it is gray at all angles.Having said all that – if you need a watch for highly critical missions, this watch will likely fall below the range of functional necessity. However, if you need a backpacking, casual or travelers watch, you should be really happy with this watch.

I like Suunto
I like Suunto watches, but they are not for everyone. Some people just don't like the size face, but I like it because I can read it with or without my glasses. This says "Pure White", but the ONLY thing in it that is actually white is the watch band. I did not like the watchband since it seems to bother a nerve on my wrist; replaced the band for a metal one, which has a much better look and feel. The appearance of the watch matches my old Suunto Core, but I do miss the bezel on the old watch that also served to protect the watch face. Battery life would be much improved if it had a larger battery, which I'm surprised it doesn't since it seems to have plenty of room in such a large watch. This could be so much more, which I think Suunto has forgotten since their watches are being made in China, not Finland, where the company originated.

Great "workhorse" complement to Elementum Terra
I bought this Core ALU Deep Black as a "day to day" watch to complement my Elementum Terra. This watch, in a number of key ways, is more useful to me day-to-day than my Terra, including:* Countdown timer (rather than just a stopwatch) - which can be used simultaneously with the stopwatch.* Sunrise/sunset times.* Separate (or auto) altimeter and barometer.* Dual timezone.* Plus/minus buttons seem to be more reliable than the twist knob on the Terra.* I'm MUCH less concerned about damage to a $200 watch vs a $1000 watch.Cons:* Finish scratches relatively easily.* All black display can be somewhat difficult to see in certain lighting conditions. All in all, this is a great ABC watch.

excellent watch
I'm stationed in Afg and had previously ordered a watch from Amazon but it was lost, so I was a bit nervous about ordering another one. The shipping company was Pier 18 and they were late in shipping it out and 3 days after the shipping date cited by Amazon I had to send a reminder email to them, but after that I got the watch in less than 2 weeks. The watch itself is fantastic, The watchband is very comfortable and the features are fairly easy to figure out. Very cool design and a watch I plan to have for years to come. Just be prepared to have to hound the shipping company every step of the way.

Can't read day or night!
I am a huge fan of Suunto products and have always had a couple of their watches dating back to my first Vector. This is the first time I have ever taken the time to review a product on Amazon and only doing so because I and such a huge fan of Suunto and don't want others to be as disappointed as I am with this watch, possibly turning them off of Suunto products in general, which are the best on the market in my opinion. I have always loved my Suunto watches up until now. I really didn't need a new Suunto as my older Core was perfectly fine but purchased this one mostly for the updated design, and because I am a sucker for new "gear". Unfortunately the white on black contrast makes this watch virtually useless for me. Visibility during the day is extremely poor at best and at night almost useless. I adjusted contrast as suggested by some other reviews but this didn't help. Increasing from factory default did nothing for daytime visibility and only added ghost images in dark making it even worse. From the research I have done you are not able to reverse the contrast as you can on other Suunto models so looks like I will go back to my older core model that I can see. If I am missing something please tell me and I will happily update this review. The features and functionality of the watch are all up to Suunto standards which I expected having an older core, and many other Suunto products over the years, and new design is exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately features, functions and design don't mean anything to me if I can't read it on my wrist. I would rate the product 5 stars if only I could read it and will buy Suunto product in the future (black on white contrast only) but without the ability to reverse the contrast on the Core ALU Deep Black can't recommend it to anyone.
