Yes: Greatest Hits SHM

not bad, just different
I feel that this CD is being treated a little unfairly ---not that it has many reviews at the moment. (For one thing, giving it two stars because of one edit you don't like is silly, in my opinion.)I will concede this CD doesn't exactly go for cheap; I CAN understand how the price tag just itself could turn a lot of people away. However, when it comes to the actual contents of the CD, I really don't think it's bad, despite the fact that it is heavy on edits. A lot of Yes fan(atic)s would probably demand that their Yes be "pure" and edit-free, but I personally don't mind that much. I actually find the edits to be kind of interesting, actually. I won't say they're BETTER than the full-length versions, or as good, but I think they're kind of cool in their own right. And Yes, er, I men, yes, some of the song selections may seem odd or questionable to certain fans who would rather that other songs had been included instead, but this is also the case with just about ANY "hits" or "best-of" collection by ANY given artist. Even the Highlights: The Very Best Of Yes compilation, as good as it is, has a couple of tracks that I personally wouldn't have minded if they hadn't been included (which is not to say I think they're bad tracks).Personally, I would say that overall, this CD isn't bad, it's just different --- which is why I'm giving it its first above-3-stars review. (And something doesn't have to be on vinyl before you can appreciate the artwork!) Again, though, I must admit that it goes for some rather hefty prices. That's the only really major issue I can see.

I love Yes but...
This collection was first released in 2014 and then re-released in 2017. The disc runs about an hour and 16 to 17 minutes. A number of the songs here are edits and there's enough room left over that they could've included the full version of Love Will Find A Way which iirc only runs 30 seconds longer. They could've left off the remix of Big Generator which would've also allowed for full versions of a couple of the other shorter songs. The reality is that there have been a number of Yes collections over the years and this is probably the least impressive. Let's look at what's been released: Yesterdays and Classic Yes were issued back in the old days and both included stuff that wasn't widely available elsewhere. These are both still available last time I checked with Yesterdays generally focusing on the band's earliest days while Classic Yes was put together by Chris Squire and mostly focuses on The Yes Album, Fragile and Close to the Edge (with Wonderous Stories added) as well as including previously unreleased live versions of Roundabout and I've Seen All Good People on a single that came with the lp. this is part of the cd making Classic Yes run about an hour.In 1991, Atlantic released a four disc box set called Yesyears including album cuts with rarities. The UK also released a two disc set mostly focusing on the album cuts called Yesstory. In the Spring of 1992, the US also released a two disc Yesstory with a slightly different track listing. These can still be found fairly easily if you know where to look. In 1993, Highlights: The Very Best of Yes was released which scales back Yesstory into a single disc hits package that is still widely available. In 1999, an import release called The Best of Yes (1970-1987) was released. It isn't as good as the other releases but I like it better than this one. In 2002, the In a Word: Yes (1969-) five disc box set was released. In 2003, The Ultimate Yes: The 35th Anniversary Collection was released in the UK which included a few songs that didn't make the In a Word set. In 2004, Rhino in the US released their own version of The Ultimate Yes which has a somewhat different set list as well as five songs that were recorded on a third disc specifically for the US market. This is still available directly from places like Amazon (look for US Edition and 3 discs). In 2011, an import two disc set called Wonderous Stories was released. It reused some of Roger Dean's artwork without his permission (iirc) and it was re-released with new Roger Dean artwork in 2014. This seems to be harder to find nowadays. As you can see, there have been a number of Yes comps over the years and I haven't even included promo releases. This Greatest Hits collection is , for me, the least of the bunch.Out of all the Yes comps, the easiest ones to still find that give you a good overview for a beginner or longtime fan are: Highlights: The Very Best of Yes and The Ultimate Yes: 35th Anniversary Collection US Edition (3 disc set).

Absolutely love Yes's Greatest Hits
Absolutely love Yes's Greatest Hits, however did not care for lead guitar/instrumental being cut from It Can Happen during mid-point of track. This is the crescendo of the song...gotta have it in there.

There Are Better Alternatives, Many Better Alternatives
The only other review here from FP Cassini says it all. If you are looking for a "Best Of" collection by any measure, there are plenty of alternatives out there. I guess a Yes Fanatic who wants to collect everything released might want this, in vinyl, for the Roger Dean art, but please! The selections on this are way off unless, like he said, this is a Japanese Market greatest hits package. HIGHLIGHTS is the best single volume Best Of CD out there for the casual fan and this compilation of radio edits is going to hurt all but the most flippant of music fans. At the very least if it is your pleasure, this will at least give you a collection of picks to load into your phone or MP3 player, but the price tag for that alone should be considered prohibitive. I was actually quite flabberghasted when I saw this title listed in new releases. For $15 you can seriously find better collections, in fact for $50 you can purchase the entire Yes catalogue in mini-replica paper sleeves (no fancy artwork or notes, just the basic CD releases of all their studio albums, it is a terrific bargain for the fan wanting to replace a worn vinyl collection, or the new progressive rock fan who wants to indulge/binge on Yes. This album could deserve a lot lower grade, but it is very hard to dismiss Yes out of hand when you are a fan of the work, and obviously there has to be a market for this album, so just do some shopping before deciding to purchase this one.
