Rommel [DVD]

Solid, well done, film about Rommel and the plot to kill Hitler
"Rommel" is a somewhat slow, thoughtful, well made film about the great German Filed Marshal and his final months of life. It doesn't have a ton of "action" and might be a little confusing if your not familiar with the plot to assassinate Hitler which is interwoven into the story. The actors are strong & compelling and the english subtitles are easy to read and make sense. I can't give the film 5 stars just because it doesn't really present anything "new" or different that James Mason did in his film on Rommel, "The Dessert Fox" done in the 50's. But the film gets a solid "B" from me for its production values. And another reviewer mentioned the film "Valkyrie" with Tom Cruise (their are a few other versions of it). I'm no "fan" of Tom Cruise, but I did like him in Valkyrie a lot, and watching Rommel made me want to watch it again.

Compelling
I enjoyed this film. Tukur plays Rommel with his usual minimalist professionalism. From what we know of the events surrounding Rommel's links with the July plot, this is accurate and compelling; especially the depiction of Speigel. One is struck by the depiction of ineptitude and chaos. What i was not sure about - and hence not necessarily convinced by - was the implication that Rommel seemed to believe that the destruction of the Jews was a series of `isolated incidents' associated with the eastern campaign. Like Stauffenberg, while it is clear that his disenchantment with Hitler involved a recognition of the criminality of the regime, Rommel's real awakening to resisting (if not actually killing) Hitler lay in the realisation that, following Overlord, the war was lost. Good production values for what must always be a difficult series of events to depict without an endless budget.

Splendid German War Movie.
When I saw this movie on Amazon Prime, I could not resist downloading it. I was not disappointed. It was an in-depth movie – a good German production. I liked Das Boat, Downfall and the original 1950s version of The Bridge. I suppose my choice of Rommel was upon the good merit of these previously watched German made war movies I had seen. I suppose I could add Stalingrad, but it was dubbed in English. I’m a Brit but dubbed English really does not work for me. Therefore, I was pleased when I realised this was still in German. I prefer to read subtitles and get a real feel for the nation speaking its native tongue. The Rommel movie concentrates on the last seven months of Field Marshal’s life. We see him just prior to the Normandy invasion force and during the botched assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler’s life. The movie makes for a splendid historical drama and I would highly recommend watching this superb war film. If you are on Amazon Prime, you can rent it for 30 days at .99p. A bargain by any stretch of the imagination. The Last Days of Thunder Child: Victorian Britain in Chaos!

Wishy Washy movie
If I were to put pen to paper and script a movie about Rommel, then I would give it a little more balance than this movie. The movie does hold the concept with which Rommel is held within modern times. That he was a great general, honourable man and the people loved him. I would disagree on all three proposals. To me Rommel was an ordinary leader lacking innovation, and, a selfish man who was not particularly liked by either his soliders or staff. This movie is entertaining but the content is rubbish for the most part.Such a pity as the subject matter holds great scope for making an interesting movie.

Don't bother trying to use Pluto
According to the app the film was available through Pluto but it refused to load so I ended up paying Amazon 99p to watch it, hardly a fortune but I do feel Amazon makes enough money without screwing me over by offering duff apps. That said the film is good and worth watching I don't know enough to comment on its historical accuracy but it feels vert authentic

More docu-drama than action movie
Prompted to watch this after visiting the town and chateau (La Roche-Guyon) which were Rommel's HQ and featured heavily in the movie. The film covers the events before and after D-Day and Rommel's involvement in the failed plot to overthrow Hitler. It seems to concentrate on giving an accurate historical depiction of those events so those interested in that piece of history will enjoy it. If you're expecting WWII action of aerial dog fights, land and sea battles you'll be disappointed. Short clips of archive footage are used mainly for that. However, I can highly recommend a visit to La Roche-Guyon if you're in the area.

Worth viewing
A German movie with subtitles, well made & good acting. Short parts interspersed with film footage of the time on a few occasions. A lot of the story was in the US-made movie Valkyrie. A sad & undeserved end for a much respected soldier in his home country & even amongst many of our own allied troops. It reinforced the madness of that regime.
