Don't seem to be growing
I'm unsure as to wether I did something wrong, but they have been in the ground for 6 weeks, and nothing seems to be happening. I've water them regularly with stimulants, but to no avail. I even took a look at the seeds themselves, but they hadn't even begun growing.

What this is
These seeds are Riverbank grape (Vitis riparia), a *wild* grape species.I've grown these for a number of years, not from this supplier though.Riverbank grapes grow across a huge section of the Northern US and Canada and are very hardy and adaptable. They'll handle extreme conditions down to -40c whilst tolerating both very hot or cool summers. The species is naturally disease resistant. The grapes are small but ripen early, but they're not good for fresh eating until frost gets them (as they're high in acidity which means they're sour). They are used in America to make passable red wines, but also for making grape juice and cooking into pies and jams in a way we'd use blackcurrants in England. In fact the flavour is quite similar to blackcurrants as are much of the uses.Because this plant naturally has male and female plants you'll need male and female vines - one male will pollinate many female plants. From the seeds you'll get a mixture of both, you'll be able to tell the males because the flowers will be different and they'll never bear fruit - keep at least one unless you have other grape vines.Riverbank grapes grow fast from seed, usually appear in about a week. They'll loom weak in their first year, but thrive after the second once they become established. This species grows as far north as the tree line in Manitoba, Canada and has been introduced to most of Europe including Scandinavia and it can tolerate our cool, wet summers because it grows at lower temperatures than traditional wine grapes. All in all an easy plant to grow, nice for making wine or cooking with, not so much eating raw. Think of then as you would cider or cooking apples or blackcurrants - a culinary or juicing fruit. Recipes for grape pies and jams can be found on the internet, Americans cook a lot with grapes, something we don't seem to have picked up on here in the UK.Would recommend it.A. KentPlant breeder
