Rustic Modern

Rustic is a word that connotes the use of raw materials, and as so rather than sophisticated it conveys the idea of almost wild. A really difficult question for an architect is how to use, let's say, stone in a way the architectonic space looks modern without the stone losing its identity of stone. Therefore "rustic modern" is a quite ambitious title. In the end I think common houses in the countryside are just more successful to achieve this goal to be both rustic and modern. The wealthiness displayed in this book is an interesting peek in the life of persons with exotic or expensive collections of furniture and purchased art but, at least in this selection, it doesn't mix well with the idea of rustic.Save for a few examples most of the homes present that contradiction to use rustic materials to represent the wealth of their owners; what means they are worked in a way that negates their essence of rustic, or are put with expensive articles of furniture or commercial paintings so the houses are rather museums or churches. Nevertheless there are interesting reflections in the design process and some examples are great. My favorite home was Owings House which uses wood, stone, crystal and metal in a way that almost seems Japanese in the sense that the materials express themselves in an honest way without diminishing the cleanliness of the design, nor appearing an anachronism, it is a building of its time (although it has been renovated). Despite my ranking of the book I think it is an interesting reading, styles are a personal preference and this book could be closer to your preferences than it was to mine.

Lots of unaffordable stuff here; but if you are looking for ideas that are affordable for most this is a decent start. Much work by first rate architects. Like the $50,000 staircase that could be near duplicated by a reasonable craftsman for pennies on the dollar. Remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I doubt any of this stuff is protected by design patents. If you are lucky enough to have architectural skills available creative thinking can work wonders. And looking for bragging rights? Few things are worth more than "look at what I got for (tiny number of) dollars. If this sounds like you the book will be a good investment. Look for it used the way I did. Information on a well used page is still the same information. BTW, I loved the plain varnished rough cut fir beams under one ceiling. Anybody got an Alaska chain saw mill?

What’s not to love about this book and images

I really enjoyed Rustic Modern. I actually purchased the book to get some design ideas for a "someday" house that my wife and I will eventually build......someday! The author does a nice job presenting the blending of what is old and traditional and that which is clearly new and pointed toward the future. As more of a traditionalist, I was surprised at how much I liked the houses and spaces that were included. Of the 16 homes featured, I particularly liked a home from Jackson Hole with barn wood that meets modern design. I could move in tomorrow! Also captivating is the layout of a residence called "Wild Bird" which sits 600 feet above the pacific in Big Sur; a wonderful blend of stone, glass, wood, and the surrounding environment. All of the homes featured are beautiful, some state of the art with all of the bells and whistles, yet all still maintaining an abundance of soul and integrity.With stunning photography and Ms. Ewald's sharp narrative, it is an excellent read. Very glad I purchased Rustic Modern!

For anyone looking for inspirational pictures of beautiful modern rustic homes, you will not be disappointed. The pictures are gorgeous and there is lots of detail in the stories. Full disclosure: I was more interested in the pictures than the text. I also got a copy of their other book, American Rustic. Both were great and filled with many beautiful shots. American Rustic is older homes, lots of log cabins. Modern Rustic (as you would expect) had more contemporary homes.

The most beautiful stunning book on rustic homes ever.You will not be disappointed!

Not very inspiring I’m afraid. Rustic Modern seems to be less about the design of a space and incorporating local/natural elements and more about the things you put in a place to “style” it. Particularly large, opulent holiday homes and retreats.

A better title for this book would be "Faux Rustic". If you enjoy books like Cabin Porn or magazines like Dwell, you will not enjoy this book. The architectural style is not "modern" but rather just "new". It features new interiors made to look rustic. Honestly, they mostly just look cheap. It could be a hotel brochure. The cover photo is not at all representative of the style featured in the book.

Every picture looks like it is from the same house; save your money & go to Pinterest; every picture looks like it came from the same house; this is decorator porn/eye canday more than a real 'shelter' book; most of the material/furniture/design in this book is inaccessible for everyone but the very wealthy;)
