YA coming of age / first love
This was my second time reading Frayed, the first book in the Willow Springs series. This is a small town romance series which follows 5x best friends from their high school to adult life, finding themselves & their person.I had the opportunity to read an arc for this book back in early 2021. Unfortunately my review has gone missing for my first time read so when I saw the beautiful special edition paperback available, I jumped on it for a reread and review again.Frayed introduces us to the 5x best friends we are going to be following over the next 5x books. Adelaide (Addy), Gigi, Ivy, Maura & Coco. With the first book following them in high school & the main female character being; Addy.Addy is the mayors daughter. Growing up with the pressure to always be perfect, has made Addy follow more what she thinks everyone else wants for her, instead of following what she wants. She has a mixed relationship with her mum, with her mum just wanting the best for her but getting lost on what is best for her or their reputation. With this in mind, Addy has been dating her mums best friend son; Alec since basically she could have a crush. Addy & Alec have been together for 3 years, except for the one Summer break they had where Alec hooked up with another girl. But Addy always stayed loyal. Which seems to kick her down more so then bring her any joy.Jett Stone is the resident high school bad boy. Co-Captain of the football team for his senior year, he is finally getting the recognition he deserves. He grew up with a single mum & a sick grandma, with many of the wealthy Willow Springs families looking down on him & his family. They are the opposite to most of the Willow Springs family & do not have much money, which resulted in Jett turning to street fighting for some quick & easy money during high school. But still keeps on top of his grades & is going places.Addy & Jett may seem like opposites, with Addy being the good innocent girl & Jett being the bad boy. But have known each other most of their life growing up in the small town, they always have had a little crush on each other. And when they are forced to partner together in a school assessment, they find they have a lot more in common. This story was told over their senior year, where we got to experience Addy pull away from her family pressure & be the person she wants to be. Jett also shows his character development of growing up in a run down household but having the forever love of his mum in which Addy feels like she hasn't had. Two different worlds, that come crashing together. But as the senior year comes to an end, will they make it together to college?4/5 stars with 1/5 steam. As this book was written in high school, Laura's usual steamy writing was put on hold to be more age appropriate. There was still some steam with the first time, but was written well & age appropriate.**warning spoilers below**My only reason for it not being a 5/5 star read is the incident that happens near the end of Addy & Jett's story. Where Addy is found to go back and "help" her ex - I didn't like that. I got so frustrated. How could Jett just let her go like that? I also got confused & angry at Addy for not having a back bone. This guy from her past has done nothing but bought hurt, and she puts him before herself and her current boyfriend? It felt like the character development of Addy went back to step one. And that is my only reason for not giving it 5/5.
