The year is 2039 and the world wars have destroyed everything and territories are run by corporations. The mightiest of which is TEKKEN. In the midst of the ruined society, one warrior rises from the streets. A young man with street smarts and raw fighting skills who is driven by nothing more than vengeance must defeat the world’s most elite fighters in the greatest tournament ever known and become the “King of Iron Fist”. Better than expected
Put off watching this, when it finally arrived. I need not have done, it ain't bad. It is clearly Tekken. Albeit a Tekken tweaked to make this film. I'm not sure it had to be so tweaked to make "a" film. But the film they did make, better than expected. The setting is different to the Tekken world that the games exist in. It's gone all near future dystopian. It doesn't feel bad in context though, and rather makes sense in the way it employed. In the fight scenes you can see moves that come from the game. And then some that don't (why have Yoshimitsu forego his sword in favour of a stick when there so many signature moves he could have performed?). Some of the game characters are in the film, but not all. That'd be unwieldy, and could only pay them lip service as Tekken fans will know they all have a story so it could grate that their story arcs are not adhered to. As it is, some of the characters that do appear in the film are involved in ways that are different to their story arcs we know from the game. Steve is in there, kinda retired. Odd then that the Williams sisters are in there, and active, when Nina is revealed as his mum in the game. The Williams sisters themselves, still assassins, but are allies instead of at each others throats. Marshall Law makes a brief appearance early on. He performs some signature moves, but doesn't really feel like Marshall Law. There is a nice touch in the narrative described a previous fight with Paul Phoenix, as the two characters have involved story arcs in the games. Eddy Gordo is in. Surprised me how joyous it was to see his moves presented, as I ruddy loathe him in the games. (Can win with him, with the eyes closed, just hitting a random direction and repeatedly hitting both kick buttons. So he's associated with boredom, and irritation from fighting against him.) His protege, Christie is in, but seemingly has no association with him in the film. Raven is in, and honestly could have lived without him. He hasn't been in the game series long enough to have the impact of another character, and what we saw of him in the film was more of a visual representation than a characterful one. A couple of characters from Tekken 6 are in too, which have even less resonance to the Tekken brand than Raven, being so new. One of my faourite characters is in though, Bryan. He isn't as mentally unstable in the film though, sadly. It's the Mishima clan that are the driving plot, and it's a plot from the games so that's nice. A young Jin is the lead of the film. We see his mum, for a while. She alludes to his father, who is the same person as in the game. Kazuya is the big baddie of the piece. His continuing discontent with his father is there, inspiring his actions. Heihachi himself is odd. In the film he's more pleasent, with an uncharacterful "honourable" mentality. Quite jarring that. There is a Heihachi related surprise after the credits which along with other parts could set up a sequel (though really, how likely is that all things considered?) There's some cast interviews on the DvD. But that's about it for DvD extras. Would have expected more in this day and age, especially considering it's a game tie-in. So yeah, better than expected. But with the caveat that it's still probably worth renting, or buying really cheap. I'm not sure this DvD is going to have the replay value of some.

Better than expected.
Well I watched this in a marathon alongside King of Fighters and D.O.A. and this is the best of the bunch. Or more accurately the least worst. While the world of Tekken bears little resemblance to the game, swapping out the present day for a post apocalyptic dystopia, it still retains the Iron Fist tournament, and Mishima family drama of the games. The costumes are pretty accurate as well, but it's really the fights that elevate this just barely out of bad movie territory. They're well choreographed, quite brutal at times, and not subject to overly choppy editing. The acting is largely passable as well. If I have one main criticism it's that it does take itself too seriously. It is a very dumb movie, but it seems to be unaware of this fact. Still it's fine. There are better ways to spend 90 minutes, but there are a lot worse too (Like The King of Fighters *shudder*).

BADASS!
The best word to describe it is badass. The reason for this is that it is badass. It stays pretty true to the story of Jin but grounds it in a sense of realism so there is obviously no ogre or devil. The fight sequences are pretty cool and the gritty tone of the film suits it. The soundtrack is also pretty badass. The acting could have been a tad better for some of them and some characters were a bit under used but that isn't enough to stop this film from being badass. So if you like badass films buy this.

Arse cleavage, shaky cam and Luke Goss selling his soul for money. oh, and a video game reference.
Piss poor. Nothing to do with the game other than the names. No styles, just random MMA (or someones interpretation of it anyway). At one point the exposition tried to attribute styles to the characters, such as Nina Williams being a master of Aikido. Then when she was in the ring it looked like very slow boxercise. Since the fighting was so poorly coreographed the camera had to rely on the old Bourne movie trick of shaking like Michael J Fox was filming! I cringed so hard throughout that I vommed a little in my mouth. I seem to recall spending a lot of time getting my arse handed to me by Heihachi Mishima when playing Tekken, way back in the day. In this film he can just about manage to walk unassisted. The guy was a beast in game and should have been mauling folk throughout this dismal flick. Jin's blood refuses to coagulate. Is he a haemophiliac? Also a large diagonal incision across the pectoralis major will bleed way more then the egg cup's worth of claret that dribbled down his front. If only his knuckles had the power of his chest! I've never seen arse cleavage before. It was a revelation. There are a few eyefuls every now and then to keep the horny teens watching. I'm old so immune but I'm sure there will be some pausing done by the 14 year olds. If you want a fight film of the tournament type then look no further than Undisputed 3. Scott Adkins makes the best fighter in this film (Gary Daniels, Fist of the North Star) look like a white belt. This movie was so bad I was waiting for Tommy Wiseau to come out and fight! "I did naht hit her! I did naaht!....oh, hi Jin....".

Tekken (Reino Unido) Blu ray
