Lucas (1986)
Corey Haim didn't make many memorable films in his short career. Secret Admirer (1985). Silver Bullet (1985). Murphy's Romance (1985). The Lost Boys (1987). Watchers (1988). They were all good films, but drugs disabled what could have been a promising career and they killed him in the end. I have always thought, though, that Haim's stand-out performance is in the film Lucas (1986). The film is written and directed by David Seltzer (The Omen) and co-stars Kerri Green (The Goonies), Charlie Sheen (Platoon), Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice), and Jeremy Piven (Judgement Night).Haim plays Lucas, a highly intelligent and eccentric 14-year old, who befriends and quickly falls in love with Maggie (Kerri Green). She is new in town and has not met anyone from the area except for Lucas, who is slightly younger than she is. High school is still out and they spend the summer together, Lucas introducing her to his weird hobbies and explaining to her how most people are superficial. They become very close, but Lucas keeps two things from her: he comes from a poor home (he tells Maggie that the big house where he does gardening is where he lives); he also doesn't admit his true feelings for her. Things change and become very complicated when it is time to go back to school.Maggie falls in love with Cappie (Charlie Sheen), who is the same age as her and captain of the high school football team, but he already has a girlfriend, Alise (Courtney Thorne-Smith), a cheerleader. Lucas is still in love with Maggie and it doesn't go down well when she joins the (superficial) cheerleading squad to get close to Cappie. Lucas is also bullied by most of the guys on the football team - except Cappie, who feels sorry for him and looks after him - because of his short stature, limited social skills, and eccentricities. Then there is Rina (Winona Ryder), the same age as Lucas, equally unconventional, plays in the school band with him, and has a crush on him. There is enough here to ensure a great story with lots of laughs and drama. Haim plays the character of Lucas without fault and his performance is testament to his true acting ability that was seldom given a chance after The Lost Boys. It is hard to pin Lucas down to a specific genre, because there is so much going on throughout. It is a very sad film in parts, sometimes very funny; the correct genre terminology in literature for such a story is tragicomedy, the juxtaposition of the tragic and the comic. That is Lucas, the film and the boy. For a teen film there is a lot of depth to the characters and the story and, although not a box office hit, the film deservedly garnered very positive reviews.Haim's co-stars, Green and Sheen, would later star together in Three for the Road (1987).

Fantastic movie
I really love this movie, Corey Haim did a great job playing this role, brilliant... It made me sad, because of Lucas situastions and it made me laugh... because Lucas is also funny and talk back to those who are mean to him.Peolpe who likes drama should buy/see this, also it might take you back to school, remembering how it was falling in love, maybe being a bit different etc.I think everyone should see this movie :)RIP Corey Haim

80's nostalgia
I think I was about ten years old when this was released and I just LOVED it!!! I adored this movie and watched it over and over on VHS. I completely embraced the character of Lucas and still think he is played wonderfully well by Corey Haim. I liked the fact that the story is somewhat different from your average high school movie. The fact alone that the "geek" remains a "geek" throughout the movie still warms my heart. As I watched it again, I was moved as I had been over twenty years ago. Part nostalgia of course, but also because the story itself has something so sweet over it, particularly the relationship between Lucas and Maggie. For those of you who haven't seen it yet - now is the time!

Loved it then
Saw this movie back in the 80's. Loved it then. Watched it again now and still loved it. A very heartwarming movie. Cory Haim was brilliant as the main character. This movie was underrated in the 80's but it is well worth watching. Will bring a tear to your eye.

Pure 80's cheese.
Lucas stars a young Corey Haim as Lucas Bligh, a 14 year old band geek with a love for insects who develops a giant crush on new girl in town 16 year old Maggie (Kerri Green) after befriending her before school starts. Maggie in turn has a crush on the captain of the football team 'Cappy' (played by Charlie Sheen) who despite sporting one of the worst 80's haircuts ever complate with hairsprayed flick is still a much better prospect than Lucas who spends the entire movie wearing what can only be described as somebody's grandfather's glasses.Lucas still believes he has a shot with Maggie even though she only thinks of him as a friend and is devastated when Cappy and Maggie end up going out together. This prompts Lucas to try and impress Maggie by attempting to join the football team despite the fact he's half the size of the other foorballers and makes a gigantic idiot of himself in the process. Lucas is also pursued by fellow band geek played by Winona Ryder who seems to have a crush on Lucas...I remember this film being a lot better than it actually is when I was younger. It's all a biy flimsy and the story line is silly but it's one of those sort of 80's films that you remember fondly only for the fact that it is one of Corey Haim's first and he went on to be a huge 80's teen star. You may wonder why I've given it three stars? Well it was going to have two, but any film that manages to incorporate the slow hand clap deserves an extra star. By the way there are no extras on this DVD, but there very rarely are with these sort of films.

Lucas
