Hans Werner Henzes choral works are not central to his oeuvre, but are in many respects fundamentally reflective of his artistic philosophy. The three choral works on this album date from 1947 (Fünf Madrigale), 1963 (Lieder von einer Insel) and 1978: Orpheus, Henzes first a cappella choral composition. In recording these pieces, the outstanding SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart and the Ensemble Modern again make a key contribution to the music of an important German composer.
