French thriller starring Romain Duris as Tom, an aspiring musician playing seedy bars in the backstreets of Paris. Torn between his music and the example of his sleazy father's life of crime, Tom seems set to follow in his footsteps. But when he meets by chance a friend of his concert pianist mother's, Tom's musical ambitions are awoken and he strives to make a better life for himself.

Worth a Watch
After all the very good reviews, I have to say, that like others on here, this film left me a little flat, though I wouldn't put any one off watching it.He’s a so called gangster but not really – he’d be laughed out of Goodfellows and I dread to think what Joe Pesci would do to him. He has a relationship with his dad – but not really. He’s one for the ladies but it never goes anywhere. He tries to re-find his mojo with his piano playing but….This is not a bad film by any means and is a couple of hours of ‘reasonable entertainment IMHO … but: great, unmissable, a must see? Oh please, this is way down the scale. There are a million films as good as this doing the rounds. Very over-rated is my final conclusion, though interesting and a film that keeps you watching throughout, so that must mean something – yes, I did enjoy it.

When is it too late to start again?
This film about a young man who has chosen to live outside the law. A chance meeting with his old piano professor leads him to take up playing piano again; something he had given up after the death of his mother. In Hollywood, this might lead to him being a virtuoso and gaining world renown, overcoming all obstacles on the way. However, this is a very french film (despite being a remake of 'Fingers' - an american production) and so it doesn't exactly turn out that way.Great performances, wonderful music, and images of a modern multicultural Paris make this a pleasure to watch.

From Rachman to Rachmaninoff
Tom works on the edges of property development, bouncing squatters, chasing out tenants, and doing a bit of enforcing. As such he follows in the footsteps of his father (played by France's trademark Bad Dad Niels Arestrup, see "Tu seras mon fils"). But he also has his mother's DNA, and she was a concert pianist. This genetic mixture comes to a head when he gets the chance to start playing the piano again, just as he also gets the chance to assist his father in resolving a dirty deal. The mixture of property and piano has excited comment from my fellow reviewers but the paternal and maternal influences worked for me. Romain Duris (the fourth Gallagher brother) has none of the features usually associated with leading men, but boy can he act.

Interesting and accomplished!
This review is from: The Beat That My Heart Skipped [DVD] (DVD)Firmly in the tradition of classic French cinema this moody tale starring the charismatic Romain Duris is perhaps not as good as the critics claimed on its original release but is clearly an impressive production which has found a very supportive audience internationally. The audio and video transfer are perfectly satisfactory. Although I wouldn't suggest this is a "must see" movie it certainly is recommended.

Predictable and dated
It's OK but the realism is on the outside surface (realistic violence) not the real story structure and the relationships. Typical of the French and Italian film and TV of this period. The Canon SLR camera, shallow focus looks dated and I found the plot predictable. If you find contemporary French macho culture somewhat more vile than the old, this will confirm your view.

Solid character study of a man torn between two very different sides of himself,
Intelligent, complex character study of small time hood with musical talent tryingto balance his hard and soft sides.A solid lead performance by Roman Duris, and some good supporting workaround him.Really nicely shot as well. But there was something a bit self-conscious, maybe even a bit sophomoric that keptme from flat out loving it. Still, I'd happily re-see it.
