Orthomolecular Treatment of Chronic Disease: 65 Experts on Therapeutic and Preventive Nutrition

Watch out- this may challenge your worldview.
This is the ultimate book for someone who believes that diseases have a nutritional basis. The history documents 65 M.D.s and P.H.D.'s whose research has been ignored (with detailed studies and outcomes). Why does modern medicine push patented drugs which are foreign materials to the body with their serious side effects? Why aren't they starting with mega doses of vitamins which are exponentially safer and have negligible side effects? Does a one day bout with diarrhea match side effects like an asthma or heart attack? This book is for people who question the status quo and wish to gain more self reliance by learning about alternatives to medical school prescribed remedies (drugs). This book may be uplifting to those who have been told there is no hope for their condition. Perhaps there is;it just may not be in the doctor's toolbag.

I now understand what Orthomolecular Medicine is about !
As I have had this book now for 5 days I will not pretend to had studied everything it as of this writing and I will add comments to this review in the future. One thing is for sure is that the author is not a self promoter, as multiple reviews have not appeared on the first day the book was available on Amazon, like in the case of Cholesterol Clarity.Andrew Saul's 800 page compilation on the treatment of chronic disease with therapeutic amounts of substances naturally occurring in the human body ( such as minerals, vitamins, co factors ) should be enough to convince any open minded person that this approach should be tried ahead of any pharmaceutical approach to the treatment of chronic disease. The book is organized into three sections: Foundations of Orthomolecular therapy ( 130 pages ) Pioneers or Orthomolecular Medicine ( 43 pages ) and about 600 pages dealing with the specifics of treatment of Alcoholism, Alzheimer's Disease, Cancer, Depression and Anxiety, Drug Addictions, Eye Diseases. Fatigue, HIV/Aids, Hyperactivity , Radiation Sickness, Schizophrenia and Psychosis. In Part one and part three is a compilation of short articles written by specialists within the field, and edited by the author. Because of this format the reader will come across some duplication of facts, but these tend to reinforce the learning of the non professional reader. The style of writing is accessible, though written at level that will engage the health care provider. Many of the case histories where details of protocol that could only be used by a doctor are probably not that helpful to the average reader, other than to convince him that important therapies can be achieve through this approach. Hopefully, the detailed discussions of case histories will convince some independent doctors to offer some of these therapies to their patients. This book gives no guidance in the use of herbs to heal.I was at first disappointed to see no discussion of liposomal vitamin C. However the authors colleagues have provided a good summary in their discussion as to how vitamin c and its potential to help people recover from the Ebola virus. see: http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v10n13.shtml

funny, and as ethical as they come
Dr. Andrew Saul is one of my heroes. Not only does he give a damn, but he's highly educated, funny, and as ethical as they come. Dr. Saul is a masterful storyteller and educator, which can come in handy if one is drugged up or experiencing brain fog from too much sugar, flour, and caffeine. I've taken 2 of his online courses on orthomolecular medicine and have had heaps of benefits. Thank you, Andrew, for Saul'ving my puzzles around Big Pharma and much more.

For fans of Orthomolecular Medicine
For those of us who are convinced that "With drugs, the sick get sicker, quicker" (Dr. Sherry Rogers) Orthomolecular Medicine (OM) is naturally of great interest. OM "prevents and treats diseases by providing optimal amounts of substances that are natural to the body." OM "provides effective treatments without adverse effects, unlike synthetic medicine." Both quotes are by Dr. Atsuo Yanagisawa, MD, PhD. This 800-page book is an invaluable reference resource. Of course, it's not the sort of book that you read cover to cover. Here's the contents: Part One - Foundations of Orthomolecular Therapy; Part Two - Pioneers of OM; Part Three - Orthomolecular Treatment (Alcoholism, Alzheimer's, Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Depression and Anxiety, Drug Addictions, Eye Diseases, Fatigue, HIV/AIDS, Hyperactivity and Other Learning and Behavioral Disorders, Radiation Sickness, Schizophrenia and Psychosis); Appendices.

Excellent informative book on more natural ways to treat illnesses
This is an excellent informative book on natural ways of treating illnesses, mainly without resort to pharmaceuticals. There is particular emphasis on Vitamin C and other vitamins and also minerals but there are other suggestions too.It tries to approach conditions from the cause rather than the symptoms, unlike the approach of general medicine which tends to concentrate on the symptoms with a separate pharmaceutical for each symptom (and possibly further pharmaceuticals to treat the side effects of the first ones). It is jam-packed full of information - not a book you would really want to sit down and try to read from cover to cover (it is a very large book) but more a reference text for you to read up on areas of interest at any one particular time. There is lots of science in it - just read the passage through several times and maybe search on Google if there are words you don't know. The most important bits are what to try - try and see if the suggestions work, maybe trying just one thing at once (keeping a good diary of symptoms) so you can be sure of the effect. Obviously don't stop existing medications unless you are really sure you can do this, but if your symptoms improve your doctor will probably reduce those medications anyway. NB it is really important not to stop most pharmaceuticals "cold turkey" as that could have unpredictable effects, as your body may have adjusted to them and need a period to adjust back - it is always best to phase things out gradually.
