can i use android auto with this adapter?

No. It does not work for Android Auto.

I want to connect my iphone via bluetooth to my a/v receiver via usb port on the receiver will this device work?

Depending on the receiver itself, this Bluetooth device will probably work. I use it for essentially the same thing.

will this plug in to the front usb input of my sony receiver and then receive songs from my iphone?

Yes. But you still need to plug it into an audio jack in order to hear any sound. The USB portion is only power/receiver, it is not "wireless"

My laptop pc has a bad sound chip (x on speaker icon). does this have its own drivers and bypass the on-board sound?

No, it's only a receiver. No speaker built in
