The story is about that and all the prejudices left from war along with the horrible memories leading to nightmares
This is historical fiction. The author actually participated in some of the story. The time is post WWII. A Japanese warrior named Kiyoshi Tsurifune goes home in disgrace because he didn't die for the emperor. He returns to a small village where he and his father had owned a fishing company. Jones Henry a Marine vet returns to Ketchikan Alaska where his father owns a fishing boat. He meets a relative of a Swedish neighbor who also owns a fishing boat. His name is Swede Scorden. Swede is a veteran from the European war where he fought in the underground against Germans. Swede gets a chance to work in the management at the local fish cannery. All three men's lives intertwine and ultimately end in The Aleutian Islands off of Alaska. Japanese are wanting to fish once again in these waters where they have been banned since the war. The story is about that and all the prejudices left from war along with the horrible memories leading to nightmares. It is about changing technology and taking for granted the supplies of Salmon, Halibut, King Crab. It is a very thought provoking book.

and it's good enough to make me want to try the next ...
This is the first of a series, and it's good enough to make me want to try the next episode. Interesting premise...former adversaries from WWII find their paths crossing in the Alaskan salmon industry. McCloskey has begun well in his effort to bring actually four different backgrounds together, and they are well-drawn, at least, so far. I recommend this book.

Uncanny ability to tell a story
Bill McCloskey has a unique ability to tell a compelling story, carefully researched, and vividly observant of all manner of detail, that leaves the reader actually experiencing the events described. As one who has spent most of his adult life on the water, though not as a commercial fisherman or military individual, I never cease to be amazed at his writingsTo read his books, is to be there into live the adventures he describes. What are unique gift that I can now share with others.
