The Great American Novel Illustrated
I first read "Moby Dick" while preparing/cramming to go grad school at UT Austin. I knew I'd never get through the required reading list of a class I wanted to take if I didn't start early. Wound up not going to grad school after all, but during that summer I read so many great books that would've escaped me otherwise. Now comes "Moby-Dick in Pictures" (Tin House Books), an amazing re-imagination of the original by Matt Kish, consisting of his very colorful, inventive illustrations using all sorts of common & found materials, alongside snippets from the novel . . . sort of "Classics Illustrated" for the 21st century. You don't need to reread or have previous experience with "Moby Dick" to enjoy Kish's take on one of the greatest books ever written. He's an endlessly fertile illustrator who breathes new life into this sadly neglected example of Melville's genius. This book is not for dummies. It's actually quite beautiful. To fit it in my budget, I scrimped and bought the soft-cover edition, still rather large & heavy at 552 pages, and not cheap. Reader's with deeper pockets might prefer the hardbound edition. It would be a permanent & welcome edition to any library. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

Moby Dick is born again!
Moby Dick in Pictures is absolutely splendid, and may well become as much of a classic as its namesake. By all means go for the hardcover in slipcase. The book is a series of images using techniques such as collage, drawing, paint, inks, markers - all on "repurposed" papers that give a richness to the overall effect. Each image responds to a small exerpt from a page of the novel. Sometimes the images are clearly representative, sometimes they arise more from the emotional impact or visceral response to the quotation. Each is worth spending time to asorb. Especially if you are into altered books or collage, or edgy art that falls into the brut or naked or naive categories, you'll probably love this one as much as I.

Gorgeous!
This is an interesting and breathtaking project that really brings Melville's text to life. Each page contains a piece of artwork that is based on a single quote from the corresponding text of *Moby Dick". The art doesn't illustrate the novel, rather it depicts the emotion and meaning of the selected quotes. Every single page offers a new and different view of what is happening in the story. The prints in the book are vivid and clear, and you really get a sense of the artist's connection with the text. Adding to the uniqueness of the collective work, each piece is done on "found paper" (i.e., pages from old books, magazines, manuals, etc.). This gives the project yet another dimension, and makes it that much more fascinating.

True Melville Fans Must See This Book!
Question: Are you fascinated by Melville's classic tale of the sea, Moby Dick? If you are, then you know the novel is a deep adventure in reading, American history, spiritual reflection and—well, many of us develop a life-long fascination with the novel and keep turning back to the classic in many forms. If that sounds like you—or a person you love—then this book is a perfect gift.My wife and I bought this for our adult son for Christmas. He's someone who has kept turning back to Melville repeatedly throughout his life and this book seemed like an absolutely astonishing creative tangent from the core narrative. When he opened the book on Christmas day, he was thrilled and he was generous enough to let us spend time with the book as well. The book is tangible proof that some readers of the classic keep diving into the depths of this masterwork for various levels of reflection. Artist Matt Kish is obviously a kindred spirit to all of us who feel that way. I'm nothing short of stunned at the day-by-day, page-by-page illustrations Kish spun out of the novel. This isn't for everyone. But if you match the description I've outlined, above, then this is a perfect gift for yourself or someone you love.

Inspiration and Awe
It was wonderful to receive this book. It is a book we find ourselves opening and spending time with it daily and is a treasure to have in our art collection. I love the quality of line in the artwork and Kish's illustrative telling of the text. It is extra amazing when one considers that Kish did an illustration a day to create this work. The entire work is a thoughtful gift of respect and a present day visual interpretation of a time honored classic.I am looking forward to watching the progress of Matt Kish's career as an illustrator.

Amazing book to keep forever
This book is amazing, inspiring, and amusing. As a member of the unofficial Moby Dick fan club, I was thrilled with this book. The artist uses a variety of media and makes each illustration fresh and interesting. It's a book to keep on your bookcase for a long time (for me, forever). I ordered it from Amazon because, as usual, the price was much better than the bookstore cost.

Not quite what I expected
The illustrations are quite remarkable. Really. However, I was expecting the full text. It was probably mentioned in the description, but I was too swept up by the illustrations and the descriptions to notice that the only text of Moby Dick is the passage on each page that inspired each illustration. I suppose I was hoping for illustration on one page and the associated page facing. I gave it to a dear friend who teaches Moby Dick. I think she appreciates it more than I do.

Joyita

Imperdibile.

Wow
There are no words for this. The ambition of this thing, the sheer magnitude of this, and how this ambition perfectly matches the themes of the book, wow. It's hard to write a review of something when that something leaves your speechless. You can get lost in this for hours and hours, and find yourself in a kind of narcotic haze. A tremendous achievement.Arjun Basu@arjunbasu
