Blockchain For the Non-Technical *** THIS IS A PREVIEW PRINT *** As IBM´s official liaison to the Ethereum core developers I gave talks on blockchain topics pretty much around the world. After one keynote I was asked for a non-technical guide to understand blockchains. This is it. The book aims to help you get your head around blockchains in general and around Ethereum specifically. Since Ethereum is currently the pre-imminent blockchain, it makes sense as reference point. The essential stuff is the same for any blockchain. This text was written for people with a fast grasp, who are not programmers. Reading this should give you the basics to cut through the hype and to identify blockchain opportunities in your professional domain. There are tiny bits of code, which can be admired and skipped. We´ll look at Ethereum´s benefits first, how it is used and what can be done with it; then explain blockchain machinery, visiting the terms that you´ll be confronted with in every discussion about its application. Exactly what you need to tell the signal from the noise in the echo chamber of honest misunderstandings and desperate marketing. We take a good hard look at limitations, throw in some history and names and give a realistic outlook. The index reads like an FAQ and you can use the book like that. However, there is a strong build up, one chapter leading to the next, as optimized path to understanding all the interconnected, moving parts. There´s quite a number of them. Blockchains are not a trivial topic. The fact that blockchain client programs are small has fooled many people into believing it can´t possibly be that hard. The challenges are in the implications though. But what’s in this book will put you ahead of almost everyone outside the core bubble. A deep dive into this field now – at least getting started – will help you to become part of the fun ahead. It should allow you to stand out, land deals or a great job. It will also make you see first hand how early we are in the game. Hopefully, we will find a contributor to the blockchain community in you, strengthening the portfolio of real-world use cases. Ideally, you´ll learn to navigate your own uncharted course through your domain and revolutionize it. From the Book’s Index: What is Ethereum? What is Ether? What is Ethereum Not? What is Ethereum Used for? Create Your Own Digital Currency! How Does Ethereum Compare? How Does Ethereum Work? What is a Blockchain? What is Cryptography? What´s the Magic? What is Holding It Back? Installation Clients Drafts of the book have been run by core Ethereum people and highest ranking IBM engineers in a bid to ensure accuracy. I’ll be happy to hear what you felt was missing or presented out of order, no matter your background. Opinions in this book are mine, not that of IBM. I am not an Ethereum spokesperson either.

Well written. I finished with a fair idea of what Ethereum is, where it is heading, and some of the problems still to be solved.

Yes there are typos in this book, which can be frustrating - but if you are looking for a book to help your understanding of blockchain technology then this book is a very good read. It is Ethereum focused, but still very useful for overall blockchain understanding.

Expensive and impossible to really understand
The book is very badly written, purchase something else.Firstly, the book is 300+ pages long, but each page contains a rather smaller amount of text than what I would expect from a 300+ page book - when you open the book, you immediately feel something's gonna be off.Secondly, the language of the book is wannabe-sexy, but in reality completely fails to bring across the real principles behind blockchain. The reader might leave each chapter with a feeling they understand, but real understanding cannot be attained from this book. The explanations are shallow. The author should write some academic papers in order to realize how to write text that at flows and is easy to follow.Prior to this book, I read Mastering bitcoin and that was a riveting read. In 200+ pages I learned exactly how blockChain works. Here in 300+ pages, I gained exactly zero deep knowledge. Stopped reading the book on p. 140, reading on would be a bad ROI on my time.

A comprehensive look at the state of the art
A comprehensive look at the state of the art in the blockchain space and Ethereum in particular. The writing style might not be to everyone's taste, but I found it very much worth reading and have recommended it to friends that want a solid introduction to the concepts, pros and cons, and wider issues surrounding blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.Don't be put off by the 'Preview' status of the book - I get the feeling it will always be a work in progress, updated as developments transpire. (mine is 'Preview 3'.)

Makes your head hurt.
This, for now, is the only book on etherium. Unfortunately it is written in Denglisch rather than English. Usages, metaphors and grammatical tropes are all translated word for word from German to English, presumably in the author's head. It doesn't set out to be a technical guide, so unfortunately it comes over as a set of marketing material written by a junior copywriter who failed English in his Abitur, but, because he is convinced he is cool, thinks he can wing it.

I'd give it 6 stars if I could, A must have for anyone interested in the crypto world.
This book is great!! I have been investing in the crypto market for over a year. I want to make a career as a consultant in the near future. I thought I was pretty savvy as to what it all meant. BUT I was wrong.. Ethereum is so important but This book covers everything and is so well written that even a newbie will be able to make an educated decision if they want to invest or not. Even more important, any investor needs to understand what is happening when prices fall, or what ICO events mean, block chain.etc etc.. This book is so detailed and easy to follow that I just bought another for a friend. There are times when you can tell the author is struggling to explain in simple terms and I need to read until I get where he is coming from but over all this will be my bible as I progress in the learning curve. Plus he provides his email address, welcomes any suggestions as to make the book better. He has redone it a few times since the original printing...Thank you Henning
