Does what it is supposed do do - split wood!
We have a wood burning stove and get wood logs from a local merchant. They arrive as just branches cut into 30cm - 35cm lengths and varying in diameter between 15cm - 20cm. The moisture content of the wood is usually between 15% to 25% when it arrives. To get an efficient burn from the stove, the wood needs to be split. This axe makes short work of splitting the wood.I am no woodsman, but I am very pleased with this axe and have been using it for two seasons now. It is the first 'serious' axe I have owned; the handle is very sturdy and absorbs the vibration from the strike so you don't feel a jolt, the blade has maintained its sharpness so far without needing honing.Just some tips from a novice: make sure the blade does not hit stones or other hard objects when working. Get some advise on how to use an axe from someone who knows - as with any tool, there is a PROPER way to use it - or at the very least, watch plenty of YouTube videos (as I did) and practice with small logs first - this is a seriously heavy axe and needs some strength and a proper way to strike. You don't need to be a bodybuilder, I'm certainly not, but what's important is the stance and the way you bring the axe down; the blade is weighted so it should do all the work. Have something really sturdy to place the logs for chopping on - I have an old tree stump that takes the knocks. Anyone that has used a little hand-held camping axe is in for a shock. My only minor gripe with this axe is that the yellow plastic coating on the handle begins to look a little grubby after a while and is difficult to clean as stains don't come off easily.

Just the job!
Makes short work of pre-cut logs that are too fat for our wood-burning stove. Needs a little bit of practice to consistently 'hit the mark', but all-in-all, a very useful and well-made Maul.

... a different brand of splitting maul and being seriously disappointed, I bought this and am seriously impressed
Having previously purchased a different brand of splitting maul and being seriously disappointed, I bought this and am seriously impressed. The weight feels good - heavy enough to drive through a log, and light enough to swing around all day.To compare to the "Faithfull Log Splitting Maul Fibreglass Shaft 2.7kg (6lb)" - it's like chalk and cheese. This Draper Expert maul has a nice fine edge, and the blade remains narrow for a few centimetres till it widens nicely - good shape for cutting into the logs. The Faithfull on the other hand was a wide angle at the edge and more often bounced off the log than cut through it -- terrible. Thank you Draper (and brother Johnny for lending me yours).

Well made, well balanced, well priced - splits logs up to 60cm
Got this maul at appr. £25 and that was quite a bargain. The maul is well balanced and easy to handle for people of non-lumberjack stature.I've split +30 logs with this maul without any problems. Any able-bodied man should be able to split +60cm fresh log with this axe with just a little practice, at least that's what I acheived. Wedges should not be necessary with this maul, I managed to split logs with quite a few ruts in them with the maul alone. The shaft is made of fiber-glass and has a good grip and seems quite sturdy. I've overshot my blow a couple of times banging the shaft on the log, but no fractures in the shaft. The head and edge has held up nicely so far with no dents in the edge.I would recommend this maul to any hobby-user looking for a good maul for light to medium use. For heavy use consider i.e. the Fiskars axes which have a generous guarantee on the shaft.

Cracking Log Maul!!
Now that I know how to use this properly I absolutely love it!Previous I had only used large axes to split logs so initially I was swinging this from behind my shoulder, way over my head and into (most of the time) the piece of wood on the chopping block. Due to the weight and the length of the shaft this was proving to be a bit tricky at times and didn't feel right at all. Then I had a moment of clarity...This Maul has some serious weight to it so I started lifting it just a couple of feet above the wood I'm about to cut. Even from 2 to 3 feet this thing smashes through the pieces of wood with the greatest of ease (I'm working on logs that are cut to about 10 inches in length). I now use this for breaking the logs into smaller pieces for burning or for turning into kindling using a small hand axe.All in all this is a brilliant product and at under £30 it's a good price. The fibreglass handle is very strong and long so combine that with the weighty head and this thing breezes through wood. With that in mind though, and akcnowledging that this is a difficult thing to quantify - it may be a bit difficult for smaller people to use.

Life changing (if you’ve been using an axe or hatchet)
Been using an axe up until today when this little (sic) baby arrived. What a difference! It’s not light - but you don’t have to swing it far - like a knife through butter!

Does the job nicely.
Splitting logs for firewood is a routine task in our household as we collect large pieces of timber rather than ready split logs. So far, we have been using a traditional style axe for most logs and a log bomb / sledge hammer for the knotty and large ones that don't want to split. This maul makes splitting logs a lot quicker. However, I would recommend a trick shown on Youtube to make the job far more efficient. Take an old tyre and attach it firmly to the top of a heavy chopping log using three pieces of timber. Stuff as many logs into the tyre as possible and swing away with the maul. Instead of the logs flying in all directions when split, they stay put. Plus, the larger area of logs makes it almost impossible to miss and if you do, the tyre absorbs the energy. It also makes it possible to get the logs into much smaller pieces.
