Grain to flour in a simple way
This useful tool provides the appearance of the front end of an old US steam locomotive, but certainly munches its ay through grain effectively and controllably (fineness of output). I've tried a range of grains and have been pleased with the results. I've tried to avoid running the mill for too long due to the strain it puts on the mixer - a couple of loads is all that I've tried at a time. Since these were dry grains (as recommended), I didn't see the need to disassemble the mil for cleaning - just let it run until there was no more grain and shook the remaining bits out. Have tried Kamut, buckwheat and Emmet so far with very usable results, for pancakes.

it’s KitchenAid, so it’s built to last 💪🏻
Good quality but suggest you plan on a ‘grinding’ session as it’s a bit of a faff to fit for just a few seeds etc.Very happy with this purchase as I got it via Amazon Warehouse and saved quite a lot by taking delivery in a ‘bruised’ box, but absolutely nothing wrong with the contents. All in original packaging.

Recommendation
It's sturdy and of good quality. For my approach and a small amount of flour, it is quick enough. If you have a lot to mill then it could be time-consuming. I am not sure whether I understand the cleaning instructions (water or brush).

Didn't work
I bought and tried to make rice flour but it broke my kitchenaid stand mixer and had to send it to repairs.

Fantastic piece of kit if you make your own bread.
This was the best addition I have bought for my kitchen aid. I have now gone from making my own bread to grinding my own flour!

Slow and awkward to clean
KitchenAid 5KGM Grain Mill (Optional Accessory for KitchenAid Stand Mixers): I read the reviews but still decided to get this mill accessory even though I already had three mills and a Thermomix to grind flour. I have other KitchenAid accessories (e.g. the spiralizer) that I really love but this didn't convince me. Yes, it does grind the flour but it takes very long compared with the Hawos Octagon (didn't check the exact time) and the TM (200g in 1 minute). According to the instruction booklet you are not supposed to grind more than 1250g (apparently that equivalates to ten cups) at a time because the machine will run hot (it certainly does: in fact, I only tried 600g, which took me about 30 minutes, because I was worried about the machine, that's how hot it felt) and afterwards you must leave the machine cool off for 45 minutes. The problem here is that I need 1200g for making bread and when I have ground the flour I cannot use the machine for kneading the dough for nearly an hour. Besides, the grain must be very dry for grinding, which is not always easy in Ireland. You are supposed to disassemble the mill accessory after every use; however, for me, the screwdriver-like tool in the box will not open the screws that tighten during the grinding process. It is simply not strong enough and will bend. I had to use a strong bread knife to open them. I suppose a very large screwdriver would also do the job but I couldn't find one big enough. The flour in my mill was moist and warm and the brush (that is also included in the box) was not able to cope with the warm flour. So then I had to leave it cool off in order to get the flour out, which means it was blocking valuable space in my very small kitchen.According to the instructions, it must then be stored disassembled. It is very easy to assemble and as easy to put on the KitchenAid as any of their other accessories but as I said, it didn't really convince me. I had to adapt my storage and grinding habits to suit the accessory. I only grind grain straight from the shop now, when it hasn't had time to possibly absorb any amount of moisture, and I allow for at least two hours for the grinding and the cooling-off of the machine. I find this a nuisance because once I start I like to get the job done but this is the only way it works for me.The flour is fine enough for bread but for cakes, I'd like it a bit finer; however, I ended up having to grind it on the third finest setting because as the machine was getting hotter (it could have had something to do with the moisture in the wheat as well) the machine clogged up and wouldn't grind anything finer than on a setting three. Even that became difficult and the machine was slowing down all the time and the flour would get stuck and not come out at all anymore.I have used cereal grinders/mills in my kitchen for thirty years but this one is the most awkward I have come across yet. Moreover, with all the adjustments I had to make, I think 1/2 hour for 600g of flour is a bit too slow, especially considering that I had to fiddle with the machine during the whole time and couldn't just switch it on and do something else. I think the grinder's funnel took about 300g of wheat so even if it had worked away on its own I would have had to fill it twice. I ended up grinding the other 600g in the TM (in less than 5 minutes and that includes the cleaning out and refilling because the TM will only take 200g of wheat at a time).Altogether, I think it is overpriced because I can get a designated mill to do the same job for cheaper and I just have to fill it, let it run, and make sure the flour doesn't overflow the bowl I put underneath it. Moreover, the designated mill will cope with 2kg of flour and more in one go without a problem (obviously it needs refilling as well but it doesn't run so hot). I would only recommend the KitchenAid grinding accessory to people who rarely need to grind flour and in very small amounts because it wouldn't be worth for them to block their kitchen space with a big bulky mill.
