Punk-rock: alive and strong in the underground
Perhaps it's simply my growing age, but each time I get another one of Duane Peters' samplers of rarities and unreleased tracks, I'm surprised to hear there is still so much vitality in the punk underground. After punk's commercial uprisings in the late '70s, and again in the MTV age, it's easy to forget that the music is still living as a commercial outcast in the underground. But devoted old-timers and newbies alike can be heard bashing out three-chord rock 'n' roll with various degrees of traditional talent and plenty of anti-authoritarian spunk.Peters' band Die Hunns bridges the late '70s to today with a growling cover of Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," that retains the original's punk-edged-metal attitude. A good deal of this collection is winningly indebted to New York and UK punk variations of the late '70s, including straight ahead influences from standard bearers like The Clash and Buzzcocks (and earlier rock influences like The Who), but also sounds of garage, glam, pub-rock and new-wave.The disc is evenly split between punk-rock with melodies and lyrics and speedier-core that's more spat than sung. Highlight include Briefs' "Human Thermometer" and the punk David Bowie styled "Baby Black and Blue" by The Lizzies. U.S. Bombs "He's the Man" digs into the classic "Have Love, Will Travel" riff for a tune that should be the next Austin Powers' theme. Thirty (30!) cuts means a lot of great music for punk rock lovers of every stripe. [©2005 hyperbolium dot com]
