the princess saves herself in this one: Amanda Lovelace (Women Are Some Kind of Magic)

Very personal offering
You can sense the rawness of the emotion in this powerful and at times hard hitting poetry collection. Amanda's poems are so honest and quite frank. It's easy to tell that this collection was written from the heart. You can feel the pain and suffering through Amanda's words. Amanda doesn't beat around the bush here. These are not poems for the faint hearted. The princess referenced in the title goes from an intimidated child who has many issues to someone that can slay the Dragon. As the poems progress our narrator gets stronger and more worldly wise. It's not an easy journey by any means. Life is cruel and throws many obstacles in her path. Some are life changing and devastating. There is darkness in her words and angst. At the start there is a lot of negativity but by the end there is hope and the promise of better things to come. By the end our narrator is stronger mentally and emotionally. The poems in this book vary in length. Some are only a few lines others a little longer. I think it's a case of quality over quantity. This book is impossible to put down once you've started reading. I read the whole collection in half an hour. I was so enthralled and engaged in the story Amanda was telling through her poems. The poems do flow quite eloquently and are ordered in such a way that a story of sorts does unfold by the end. I found these poems beautiful and tragic. Well crafted and a real joy to read. I think this collection shows that there is hope even in the darkest of situations. You must not give up no matter what the world cruelly throws at you. This collection is moving, it does make you feel sad and upset. It does make you appreciate the good things in life. The end of the collection comes all too soon leaving you energized and desperate for more.

The Princess Saves Herself In This One is a collection of poetry, which I came across purely by chance on Tumblr.Author Amanda Lovelace has a blog there as Ladybookmad and the blog was recommended to me. The current post being promotion for The Princess Saves Herself In This One. This is a free book until the 5th of July and can be purchased from Amazon. I wasn’t going to pass on a freebie and immediately begun to read.I was shocked at first with the poetry being so precise and truthful. The format of the poems is also a variation on the norm and it seems that all the ‘rules’ of poetry have been thrown from the window. The subjects are of abuse, cancer, family ties, anorexia (among others) All difficult subjects to write of but these poems are fresh and enlightening. The Princess Saves Herself In This One made me think of my own losses and think from the perspective of the other people that those losses must have affected.By the end the positive does however outweigh the bad and Amanda Lovelace begins, I think, to speak directly to the reader and I felt empowered by her words. Some of the sentiments of the poems match my own and I felt that I had found my voice through these poems.A soaring collection of poetry, I wanted to reread The Princess Saves Herself In This One as soon as I had finished it.

thankful i took a leap of faith and read some poetry
I don’t read poetry like, ever? I don’t think I would even call myself a fan of poetry but this book changed that a little. But given that I’ve spoken to Amanda a few times I decided to do what people do and support people they know!So I bought a copy of her self published book and read it on the train to see my boyfriend. This train in particular was so full that every seat was full, the walk ways were full, and the area in front of the doors were full. I was near the doors and decided to just brave it by sitting on the floor because there is no way I could do such a long journey stood up. Thankfully everyone around me followed suit so I didn’t get squished. So you had to know this scene because I do not like crying in front on people. I do not like crying in public places. But that didn’t stop me.This book just, man, I don’t even know what it was okay? It just hit me.So many of these poems just had a lot of impact to them and I related to so many of them too. Hence the tears, possibly. It was just so honest and real. I never thought it possible to relate so well to poetry.(And its definitely improved my opinions of it to the extent I’ll happily give other collections a try.)I read it all in one go and immediately left it at my boyfriends for his sister to read.I don’t reread books like, ever? But when I saw that Amanda was getting published and it would include more poems then of course I jumped on board given my strong reaction and love of the first. In fact I was so hype that I also bought a second copy to do art in because I felt this was possible when I was first reading it in tears on the train floor. The new poems stuck out to me, simply because I found the old ones very memorable so it was nice that I could pinpoint what was new content. However, I didn’t have such a strong reaction to it this time. Perhaps I was more prepared? Perhaps I should stick to my “don’t reread books” plan of action?Either way the extra copy didn’t go to waste, I did a giveaway on Twitter for it and Angharad (the winner) also really enjoyed it [4 star rating n GR].I still highly recommend it, and its totally my own fault for not enjoying it as much the second time round.

Just a feel good inspiring collection
I bought this years ago as a treat while on a Waterstones binge and it’s one of those books that people always eye up on my bookcases. I recently bought it as part of a gift for a friend and she absolutely loves it. She’s found it a huge help in her sobriety journey and is keen to buy the next two in the series.Love!

Emotional and beautiful
Gut wrenching and beautiful honestly. Each word written sucked me in and then spit me out and then pieced me back together. This was such an incredible journey, and one I can relate to so well. Thank you for sharing your story with us Amanda.

Bonito poemario
Me gustó. Trata temas del amor, la pérdida de los que amamos, los conflictos sin resolver y el amor propio. Mucho amor propio
