More and more textile artists are using natural processes in their work, from dyeing with rust to working with found and scavenged items, and this book is the first to bring these increasingly popular techniques together. It promotes a way of working creatively with what is close at hand, whether gathered on walks by the seashore or collected in your garden, and working in tune with natural processes, bringing the rhythms and unpredictability of nature into your work. Examples of this type of working include rust dyeing embroidered fabric to give it a natural patina, dyeing with garden fruits or seaweed, weaving with pieces of beachcombed fibre and printing with found objects. In all of this work nature is directly harnessed to make its mark. The book is illustrated with the finest examples of contemporary embroidery and textile-art work using nature, by artists whose practice is tied up with their experience of and respect for the natural environment, often capturing a very strong sense of place and a feeling of calmness and contemplation. Review: Lovely book - Love this book. I took it out from my local library and just had to have a copy of my own. One I will return to it again and again. There are lots of ideas for development, not just the authors way, other textile artists are also featured. Review: great visuals and text and it flows really well - great visuals and text and it flows really well. She does not go into great detail of the different techniques (not a project/tutorial book) but is more to get your creative juices flowing with lots of suggestions of further resources. She gives an overview of techniques by relating them back to examples her own work or other artists but encourages you to follow your own creative path. I really enjoyed this book is one to keep and dip into, or just drool over the pictures.

Fabulous book
I love this book! The feel of the cover and how the pages are laid out.......and that's before reading anything! Brilliant book. Alice Fox is very generous with the information and her discoveries which are all presented in such an interesting way.

A joyful book
Beautiful illustrations and images, and very eloquently written. An actual joy to read and use. I am still getting through it as I devourer each page and study each image. It did not get five stars from me because I would prefer to have a bit more technical information included ( particular tyopes of fabrics, threads and cords used etc ) when the techniques were discussed as well as more discussion on technique which is why I bought the book.

Good images but more difficult to do.
I felt the instructions were not fully developed on how to achieve results. Some beautiful work by various echo artists were exhibited but the “How To” were not clear enough .

A keeper!
The book is a gift to handle - I love the covers Batsford is using for this book and others like it. Tactile and lovely. Inside, it gets even better. Beautifully presented - with wonderful examples. I very much appreciated Alice's straight-on writing - no elephants in the room, here. Yes, some of these processes are fragile, and fugitive, and yes, that does put some artists off. It always concerns me when a piece is for sale and has utilized some of the techniques Alice addresses. Does the new owner understand the piece may change, age and possibly fade or decompose? But in the long run, Alice is absolutely right. Every work of art pretty much has a shelf life, and can be damaged or broken. So be clear-eyed about whatever it is you're using, and enjoy the ride. Her great examples, and easy to follow advice, make this book a real inspiration, and a keeper.
