First new recording in years and if you're a Miller junky it doesn't disappoint. A mixture of new songs and covers, the voice is as good as ever and the musicianship is top quality. The band is tight and loaded with the friends Mr Miller has relied on for his regular live gigs in the USA. Combine this talent with his new enthusiasm for the studio and you have a very listenable CD. Not so sure if this will attract a new generation of admirers and at times it does feel a bit light-weight alongside his all-conquering Fly Like an Eagle period. But then that was a long time ago and we all move on. It's interesting to note that on the strength of this release Stevie boy has decided to include a few European dates within his current touring schedule. The energetic way this set was performed in the studio suggests the live act should go down a storm with the dedicated fans.

The Gangster is back...
Steve Miller started out as a blues guitarist in the 60s and in 2002 I saw him at the San Francisco Blues festival playing an amazing set of over two hours with other Bay Area blues artists such as the remaining members of Canned Heat etc. This is the first 'Steve Miller Band' album for 17 years and sees Steve playing blues covers rather than his own songs but many, like the opener "Hey yeah", have Steve's trademark super-smooth vocals and guitar. However, for me a whole album of these vocals and guitar would have been just a little too bland for blues but luckily Steve is helped out on about half of the songs by Sonny Charles on vocals and by old band member Norton Buffalo (who sadly died recently) on harp to add just a bit more grit to the mix. Guitar God Joe Satriani also guests on a couple of tracks. Despite being 'a blues record' the CD does have lots of variety, from the New Orleans R&B of "Ooh poo pah doo", to the Chicago blues of Ots Rush's "All your love", and to the sweet soul of Jimmie Vaughan's "Sweet soul vibe". My favourite track is probably Jimmy Reed's "Ain't that lovin' you baby" - an over-played song if ever there was one - but in Steve's hands it swings like crazy and has that totally distinctive Steve Miller sound. He pulls the same trick with Elmore's "Look on yonder wall" and if a couple of the covers here don't quite work by-and-large this is a great sounding, very consistent recording that should please both blues fans and Steve Miller devotees.

Five star foot stompin Rolls Royce R&B deluxe
Steve Miller and his excellent band reel off a selection of rootsy numbers in the man's own sweet style - rocking out with a smooth, slick, soulful sound that is guaranteed to get your feet tapping and lift your spirits. Other reviewers give the details but surely, surely 5 stars people!!! A personal favourite is Rock Me Baby - right up there with Robin Trower's live version and Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart on Truth - all different - all valid - all rock! Also Dont Cha Know and You Got Me Dizzy but the whole thing is bliss from end to end. I bought this on holiday and played it endlessly in the car. My three boys 14, 12 and 9 LOVE every second of it and if you can't sing along with the Ooh Poo Pah Doo - check your pulse!

Bingo! a winner
Welcome back Steve Miller! His unique stamp is all over these timeless tracks. He has served up a familiar dish but transformed some if not all into new originals. This may be sacriledge to some dyed in the wool blues fans but listen again. There is power in the musicianship and the voices(his and the late Norton Buffalo) add depth and dimension to tracks that are occasionally no more than blues ditties. The exchanges on Tramp are spot on and Steve's much underated guitar licks and chordal progressions make this and all tracks exciting listening. A very well produced album - no fog, no gimmic, nothing out of place. Despite a covers album it already has a top ten place amongst my classic albums list.
