I have an old painted toolbox, which is quite rusty. I would like to preserve the original paint, but remove the rust. Will this work for that?

It may work but I would try some soft scrub bathroom cleaner that works magic on rust spots but you will have to clean well after to remove any residues.

I ordered a jar of fine, got a jar of original with a fine lid. Reordered the fine. Can you please make sure I get the right thing?

It will still work, it doesn't scratch the chrome it polishes it.

How well does it do on old water spots?

Takes water spots right off and the nice thing is this leaves a wax to protect the chrome after. I've ridden bikes for 50+ years and I've never found a better rust remover and protectant.

Would this product remove light pitting that Mother's Chrome Polish can't?

No. Pitting is a permanent deformation of the chrome plating. It can remove any surface corrosion or impurities. That minimizes the visual appearance of the pitting especially if it's minor. I hope this answers your question.
