Surprisingly easy to read
Considering their age, these stories have aged well and still hold up to this day. Some are bitter, some are sweet, and some could be the basis for a 70's sitcom gag. Each story has something different to say, which keeps you engaged throughout as you always wonder what is around the next corner. Especially as some of the stories are so short, giving you bite-sized times to read.

Highly recommended. Lovely stories.
Really enjoyable read.Short stories do have to have an ending, at least that is my opinion. These do.I usually have three books ready to be read. However, each is completely different ie: a novel, a biography and probably a book on history. This way, I read a few chapters from each and find that in the end only a few chapters left !Short stories are ideal because they fill the gaps of my other two books very conveniently. My favourite short story here is "Jack".

Great little snapshots which seem to say so much in just a few pages
I'd never read any Chekhov before and had been given a couple of his short stories to read as part of a literature appreciation course. I decided to buy a collection and read a few more. This book is less than 200 pages and contains 26 stories, along with a 12 page introduction which gives a background to the author as well as introducing some of the tales. The stories are all fairly short and very readable. I was surprised how much I enjoyed them.Every story that I read was great and Chekhov seems to capture a moment in time by bringing into the head of the reader. Some of them are very moral whereas others observe without making any judgements.I was blown away by the bleakness of almost all of the stories and loved the emotions that they stirred up in me - sadness, disgust, anger. If you want to get a real glimpse of Russia in the late nineteenth century then this is a great place to start.

Easy reading and charming
Chekhov really is the master of description and and a comic genius. Charming and funny book.

Refreshing change
A great book. Totally different to anything that I have ever read and very easy to read as well. These are all about looking at a totally different culture from ours. Well described with stories not to be found in our local literature. A refreshing change and very well written without words that would need a dictionary, so no interruptions in your enjoyment.
