What are the ingredients?

I have used this make in the past but my current one is Ice Guard made by Optima -- I am sure they are the same. The label says: Ammonium Alum (natural mineral salts) and says that it is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. There is more on the label but the print is very small. I have been using such products for years. Each crystal lasts for a very long time. Hope that helps.

Is there plastic in the packaging please?

Yes as isvisible in the current packaging imagw. It was initially packaged in brown paper card. But not now.

Is this ok for a 9 year old boy?

I'd think so, it's only a a piece of rock. Works though.
