Do you put the whole strip into the urine up to the blue line? Or is it just the tiny white bit at the end?

You just dip the end with the reagent pad into the urine making sure the whole pad gets dipped. You can see the pad clearly in the product photograph.

What does the colour chart mean there is no explanation if you are a first time user

It usually tells you on the pot what colour coding it is. You just have to match the stick to the colour and then it tells you what it is. Even on the inside of the pot it may have a sheet of paper with colour coding on. Thats about all I can tell you, Hope this helped. If not ring the manufacturers up and tell them there was no explanation sheet. Or ring your local surgery and ask the nurses they maybe able to help. Or check on line to see if there is sheet you can buy?
