An excellent board game, a modern classic tile laying game
Having got back into board games this year, years after last being into them when our son was young, we've been buying some of the classics that have come about since then. This one is popular and routinely highly recommended. It's a game based around laying tiles to build a continuous connecting landscape and playing your "meeple" playing pieces to claim terrain features and score points. This comes in a nicely designed box with very solid components, made of of cardboard tiles and wooden "meeple" and feels like real quality. It feels like very good value for money. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, with good examples to get you started. We found ourselves getting out heads around it very quickly. It's a very enjoyable game, engaging yet very relaxing. The design is clever, simple yet with a decent amount of complexity within. This has become one of our most popular games, played between myself and my wife and with friends. We love it, this is one I'd recommend to anybody looking to collect modern classic board games.

A great modern classic!
An extremely easy game to pick up and learn the rules for. It's also very easy and quick to teach to other players. The game is simply to take a tile, place it down in a position where the artwork aligns, and place a meeple if you want to, provided you can. You can't place a meeple into a feature already occupied, but you can sneak more meeples into a feature but merging two existing incomplete features together - a fun bit of strategy that allows you to share or steal points from your opponent! The game stops when there are simply no more tiles to draw from, so it has a natural finishing point, and at that point, any remaining scoring is done. The game quality of the tiles feels really nice; however, a few of mine are misprinted, so the paths don't quite line up, unfortunately, but it's still clear which features are supposed to line up. There's many expansions for Carcassonne, and I will considering picking some up! Would recommend!

Forget Monopoly or Charades, dig out Carcassonne for a boardgaming christmas treat!
You know what it's like. The prospect of another Christmas family get-together where you either play Charades (uggggh) or Monopoly (and risk all that bitterness and in-fighting just because Grandma makes up her own rules as she goes along) has you searching for a board-game alternative with a bit of bite. I've had my eye on Carcassonne for quite a while before the price dropped enough to make it worth a go. I've got an 8 year old daughter so I figured this would be a good game for her to cut her proper board-gaming teeth on, but also a lot of fun too as we love anything involving building and territory a la Civilisation. Carcassonne is one of those games that's deceptively complicated looking at first glance, but is actually very simple and easy to play and pick up once you've established a few simple rules. Picking out the centre tile for your map, you then take it in turns to draw other map tiles, join them on, add a few meeples to establish your score, and progress around the score board. The real strategy comes from taking a gamble on whether to play all your meeples (and perhaps miss out on bigger city territories or longer roads to inhabit) or hold a few back hoping for bigger scores. The entire game can change from turn to turn, so it's fantastically exciting and strategic. The board quality is extremely high, all player pieces feel nicely crafted and made. Though the game time can be quite short, sometimes games can go on for longer than you expected as players all try to max out their scores to claw together the winning number of points. There are tons of guides on the internet on how to play and best strategies, and there are many expansions to add to the base game to make it even better. Brilliant stuff, and a better festive gaming treat than dratted Monopoly!

Fantastic Family Game
This is a great entry game into board gaming. Easy to pick up the rules and therefore a great family game. This game contains a couple of very basic expansions, which means that the game has longevity. My only very minor criticism (hence only 4 stars) is that this version isn’t quite of the quality of earlier ones, so tiles don’t necessarily align and I wonder how long a well-used game will survive for! This game rightly has a fantastic reputation - you won’t regret buying it!

This game is great to play with the family or just two people (we actually like it best with just 2 players). The whole game takes about 30 minutes, whether playing with 2 or 4 people, and it’s so easy to learn. There are some mini expansions/extra rules included to make the game slightly longer or more complex, but our kids like to play just the basic rules for a fast, not too complicated game. Also love that there is no set up and easy clean up. The pieces look nice and seem very nice quality. We buy and try out a LOT of games, most don’t get played more than a few times, but this one became an instant favorite.
