Don't listen to the Doomwytes!
Don't listen to all the negative reviews. This is one of the best in the series. It would be my favorite ever if he hadn't written The Rogue Crew. Korvus Skurr (or something like that, the leader of the doomwytes) and his doomwyte bunch could NOT I repeat NOT be removed from the plot and have had it like it was. It would not have been called Doomwyte without having doomwytes in it. There are parts that would not have existed and the plot, unlike many protest, would have been incomplete without the doomwytes and snakes. For example, there would have been no Baliss without the doomwytes, and Baliss is huge, in more ways than one. A wonderful book, and the only reason that I can think of that a lot of other people are criticizing it is because they themselves were cronies of Korvus Skurr, and that they were jealous that the Redwallers won they criticized the plot. They are doomwytes! If you are one of those reviewers that I'm talking about that wrote a critical review, let me ask you this. Do you think you could write this story better? I doubt it.

Not the best
I've been a fan of Brian Jacques' books for years, and I absolutely love the Redwall series. That being said, however, this was not my favorite. Jacques usually does a good job of weaving two plotlines together into a single, exciting, interesting story. There is usually one, maybe two, strong "central" characters that you get to know very well, and several other important members that contribute to the story and keep it moving. There's often a love interest or two that may be tied up in an epilogue. And though you get attached to some characters that don't make it, Jacques almost never kills off characters without a reason. This book was unsatisfying on several levels. First, there are three "main" characters, plus others, which makes it very difficult to get a feel for them, and I think the characterization suffers. There are several successful storylines, but they aren't as spellbinding and page-turning as usual. There seemed to be a lot of senseless violence (including the death of 4 or 5 Redwallers where one would have made the point just as well), and less of the Redwall fun and good cheer. And, not to spoil anything, the story ends with a perfect conclusion to three romances, which seems to be a bit of overkill. So, overall, not my favorite. Though, honestly, go ahead and read it anyway. It's not horrible, and it will make you appreciate your favorites even more.

And the series continues!
I read these books growing up, and still go out of my way to pick up any new ones Mr. Jacques manages to crank out. Some of his later books were none-too-enthralling. His writing seems to sway drastically between solid and captivating, and sketchy and poor. I was weary of this book at first. It throws a lot at you and the plot seems far too fantastic at first, but he pulled through with tying it all together and making it work. I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed it! Although I'd like to know how he swung from names like "Martin" and "Matthias" and "Luke" to names like "Dwink" and "Furf". All the same, a good addition to the series.

The story continues.....
I've read all of the Redwall novels so I've become so familiar with the characters they seem like old friends. After all this time the books have blended together to form one really LONG story and it becomes difficult to distinguish between the individual books. That being said, Doomwyte is not my favorite of the series (my favorite is The Long Patrol). The story just didn't seem fresh and it had more of a "been there, done that" feel to it. Even so, Brian Jacques is such a masterful storyteller that he manages to bring such wonderful "life" to the characters that you can't help but become engrossed in their story. So even though Doomwyte wasn't my favorite of the series, I still couldn't put it down!

Another Great Tale of Redwall
I have been a fan of the Redwall books since reading the early ones to my son. He is now a teenager, and I am STILL reading the Redwall stories. While Loamhedge is my favorite story, Doomwyte will come in a close second. This book reminded me of the early Redwall books - full of twists and turns, riddles and surprises. And a few sad chapters as well. In this book, as in all the Redwall stories, evil is truly EVIL, good is truly GOOD; friends are made and loved ones are lost. I would highly recommend Doomwyte to all real Redwall fans.

Another Great Book
The Redwall series of books is well written and perfect for both young and young-at-heart readers. It’s a fantasy set full of adventures of good versus evil, coming of age, finding bravery and friendship, reveling in poetry and song, and feasting as if at the end of a ten season famine! Brian Jacques crafted wonderful friends and heroes ate Redwall Abbey, and you’ll enjoy meeting them again and again!

Doomwyte is another great Redwall tale!
Doomwyte is another entertaining Redwall novel! I got it for my birthday from my younger sister and devoured it. It is as exciting as all the other ones I have read, and features a new conflict that doesn't involved rats. I really recommend it for ages of 9+ although those who are younger may enjoy as well (it depends on the reading level of the child)

Jacques is Back!
I'm a big fan of Redwall, and Brian Jacques, but if a book sucks, I'll admit it. I love most of the Redwall novels with the exceptions of 'Triss', and 'Loamhedge'- (what was the point of that "quest" again?)Many have criticized Jacques for his "same-old" style throughout the Redwall series, but his style in these books is the exact reason I love them in the first place, so I'm happy he doesn't change it too drastically. But after reading 'Doomwyte', I've realized that maybe a little change isn't too bad. Jacques gets back to the root style of Redwall, which old fans will recognize from 'Redwall', 'Mossflower', etc., yet it also has a unique element too it. The riddles, the quest, the feasts, the heroes and sundry are still there but I believe this story to stand out more from his most recent Redwall additions, probably because I can still remember the story and characters long after.'Doomwyte' is definitely a page turner, with a mystery and an eerie feel to it- I loved that. I couldn't put it down, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. Some of Jacques recent novels of Redwall I would describe as good books, but not great. They were a nice a read, but not memorable, I don't even remember most of the characters because they were all mediocre. This newest novel is different- the story is fresh and the characters, even the villains, stand out. If an old Redwall fan has given up the Redwall series because current books in it have disappointed them, I'd say give this one a try. It's worth it.

always been a fan
I ordered this together with "the Long Patrol" as I've loved others in the Redwall series and though I haven't begun reading these yet, I know I shall not be disappointed. Although I'm no longer a child, I find this series excellent light reading for adults who just need some relaxing fun reading.
