My First Pop-Up Endangered Animals

Spoiler-free: A brilliant and fun pop-up book all about endangered animals.
This is a lovely book of pop-up animals which are all endangered. The book is smaller than A4 in size and is filled with fifteen amazing pop-ups which look so brilliant when you open them up. Each double page contains one animal on it along with some information about the animal too.I love how all the animals look in this book. Each double page contains one animal that unfolds on each page well. I like how the different animals unfold in different ways and how fun some of them are to look at, especially ones like the okapi which moves its head while unfolding it making it look like it’s raising and lowering its head when you open and close the book. Along with each pop up animal there is a short description of the animal plus where it can be found, which continent. There is a real mix of animals from the okapi and rhino to a whale, penguins and frogs and more. Each animal looks good with a lot of great colours used and I like the designs of them too. The pop-ups are quite sturdy made of a good card and don’t feel like they will tear easily but as I said what makes these so interesting to look at his how good the pop-up itself is. Rather than just a simple pop-up shape, each animal unfolds in a unique and interesting way with some of them having quite a complex folding pattern, like the okapi and geometric tortoise, making the unfolding of them look so amazing and magical.Overall it’s a great and fun book for children to look at and I’m sure many kids will enjoy opening each page to see the animals inside. I do think it would have been better if there was an introductory page explaining more about how these animals are all endangered, and maybe some more detail on that rather than what's written just in the blurb, but apart from that it’s a lovely pop-up book.-Thanks to Walker Books for a free copy.

Sad, necessary but beautifully made
I've seen some stunning pop-up books, they are all clever and intricate and beautiful. But there is something sad here about having to educate even our very youngest readers about the category of 'my first endangered animals'.That aside, Davey has made a very sturdy and fascinating pop-up book here. 15 animals from around the world, in a hardack square suitable for young hands, the pop-ups themselves aren't so delicate, flimsy or sticky-outy that they will be torn out instantly.Like any pop-up book, there is a risk, but each is contained nicely within its page and secured to the page in several places to avoid this. Each species is realistically drawn, with lovely colours and details. We find out the name of the animal, where they live in the world, and one or two facts about them, each one different so you don't know what to expect.I can't tell if there's any sort of order to the species. I would have liked a map included somewhere to show children where each animal's home is, but as this is for young children, keeping it simple is usually best. This is high quality, long-lasting and worthy of many re-reads and browses. I learned something I didn't already know about Harlequin Poison Frogs!Older children will still like the pictures, and reading the facts for themselves, and it's a lovely way to introduce some of the natural world to the youngest of children and arousing curiosity, while hinting at what humans have done to it.For ages 2 and above. With thanks to Walker Books for providing a sample reading copy.

Educational and fun
This is a hard-cover book that measures approximately 7.5 x 7.5 inches and roughly just over 1 inch thick.I always find it interesting to read a book by the author who has also done all the illustrations in the book. This is a special and very well written and planned out.It mentions different animals, where they are from and also a little bit of information about them as well as the lovely pop-up animal cut out images. Some of the animals you can look forward to seeing in this book are Poisonous frogs, gorilla, penguin, shark, rhinocerous and many more. In total there are 15 animals.I think teachers would enjoy this book as you could make a whole lesson based on this book and teach the children about animals they would otherwise never have heard of that belong to other countries. It could also open up conversations about endangered animals and the importance these animals are to the planet. My daughter is a teacher so I will pass on this book to her and I am sure she will make good use out of it.I received this book directly from the publishers for review purposes.
