The grammar book you need
If you are an intermediate or advanced student and you feel you need reliable English grammar information and practice, you should buy this book.If you are an ESL instructor and you are looking for materials that will help you answer the questions your students keep asking you, you owe it to yourself and your students to look at this book. There is no better grammar practice book for upper-intermediate to advanced students of American English available than Grammar in Use.----As a longtime ESL professional with many years of experience both in the USA and abroad, I have been working with various Cambridge University Press "In Use" titles since the beginning of my career. At present, I work in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as an adult ESL instructor for Allegheny County's community-based adult program and I also do corporate ESL training on a contracted basis.Grammar In Use is my standard grammar reference text for all upper-intermediate to advanced ESL groups working to learn English for general purposes. I ask practically all my private students at these levels to buy this book, or I buy it for them. The majority find that it is the best investment in their English language learning they have ever made. The third edition of GIU incorporate the changes made in the British third edition of this book. These include a number of new units greatly expanding coverage of phrasal verbs and also minor but important changes to the explanations and exercises throughout the book. These small changes bring grammar explanations up to date with shifting usage patterns today, and also tweak a few descriptions to make explaining grammar issues easier for instructors. The order of things in the English language teaching world today is that the majority of US-trained ESL instructors tend to use the Azar series for regular grammar supplementation theory and exercises, while British-trained instructors prefer the "In Use" titles. I've used both over the years. For a previous edition of this book, another reviewer on this site, in an excellent technical review, has already outlined all my primary professional objections to the Azar series. The reviewer has also touched on the main reasons why far too many US-based ESL instructors continue to rely on the Azar titles as much as they do.It may seem strange that two professionals would explicitly mention the Azar titles in a negative context in reviews for another book, but I can only say in response that I am very thankful it has been years since the last time I was asked to adopt the Azar books as set texts in an ESL class.I only wish that I had had the chance to read something like this or had been able to use it to discuss grammar supplementation policies with some of the ESL managers I worked with in the earlier years of my own career, and that's why I've written and posted it here.

Great book for self-studying
I am from another country and I honestly struggle a little bit when I first got in America because I really needed to improve my English and this book helped me A LOT! I had the habit of studying at least 30 minutes per day using this book and doing the exercises that there is in it and it was great for me. And I am always going back to consult it when I forget or when I am confused about some grammar rule.

Fine All-around Grammar Review
I've been using Grammar in Use in an ESOL classroom for years. I've also used it for individual tutoring and workplace literacy. While it doesn't cover everything, it does a great job of dealing with the most often used grammatical structures, and because it has the answers in the back, it is great for independent study and review. It makes sense to buy it from Amazon because it costs about half as much that way.

The book is great (but the 5th edition ain't)
This is the edition to buy. I have been using the 3rd edition for a long time and am very pleased with how everything is presented.. Previous to buying this book, I bought the 5th edition (as an "upgrade") and was really disappointed. In the 5th edition, the font is hard to read, the printing is too light, and the graphics confuse rather than help the reader in following and understanding the information. Stick with the 3rd edition.

Wonderful study of spoken english without complicated grammar rules
This is a very good study of spoken english. It is particularly good for use in teaching English as a spoken language. However, students with a good grasp of English can also use it for personal study as the concepts are well-explained and they can evaluate themselves by checking their own answers. The Grammar in Use Basic is essential for anyone wishing to master English.

Terrific Resource
We use this book at the language school where I teach. It is very well organized, with each section logically following the previous one. The information is succinct and provides an excellent foundation for understanding and mastering each concept. As a self-study book, it is a good reference for students who already have some knowledge of grammar.
