Love this poem books by a very thirsty Japanese lady lol. I can get why she was so influential in her time. I wish the author would have put the original Japanese for comparison in the book. There's plenty of space

I have loved Asian poetry for most of my life, especially Japanese Tanka, Haiku and Senryu poetic forms. I recently purchased this 137 page soft cover book (River of Stars: Selected poems of Yosano Akiko, Translated by Sam Hamill and Keiko Matsui Gibson) on Amazon for a bargain price. This is a beautiful collection of poems from one of the most prolific women poets of Japan. Yosano Akido (1878-1942) wrote more than seventy five books including twenty volumes of poetry.The volume is organized into the following topics: An introduction telling about the life of Yosano Akiko, the Tanka poems, modern style poems, mountain moving day, the only question, a wish about poetry, the universe and myself, self-awareness, women are plunder, the town of amazement, cold supper, you shall not be killed, brother, love, first labor pains and a blow from my son august.If you like Japanese poetry you may want to check out this fantastic collection of poems by Yosano Akido.Rating: 5 Stars. Excellent read...

So rarely do we Westerners hear women's poetry from Asia that books like this can be eye opening experiences.Akiko was a famed poet in the early twentieth century and her poems still gleam and breathe after all these years.Highly recommended.

Lovely deep felt translations of an amazing timeless poetess.

Have always been a fan of her stuff, esp. the tanka. the translation by Sam Hamill & Keiko Matsui Gibson the best I've yet seen. Illustrations by Addiss a real plus.
