A well researched account of the raids on the Channel Islands
Storming Hitler's British Fortress: The Commando Raids on the Channel Islands in World War II is a well researched book detailing the raids executed by British forces on the Channel Islands during the war. It also goes into detail about raids that were planned but ultimately never took place due to a number of different reasons. It contains many photographs from the period that I was not previously familiar with as well as modern day photographs. One major area where this book is lacking, and why I did not rate it higher, is the lack of maps and diagrams of these operations. Although there are a few maps of the islands of Herm and Sark that are of the period, they aren't really helpful. Unless you are familiar with the islands of Guernsey, Alderney, and others, when the authors mention particular landing points, landmarks or objectives, the reader has to map out the island and operation in his or her head. What I chose to do was pull up a map of the island on my phone so I could visualize the operation as I read. This really made the book less enjoyable when you could have easily printed these right there in each chapter to help the reader.Otherwise, at less than 200 pages, this book is well researched yet an easy read. It's the most detailed account of the various raids that I have read to date. If you're a fan of special operations or WWII in general, it's probably a good one to have on your bookshelf.
